Should I Say Yes to the Perfect (Two Sizes Too Small) Dress??????

Since the day my FH proposed, I've dreaded going shopping for a wedding gown and planned to go sometime in Oct/Nov. But since so many people insist that I go early, I went yesterday. I dreadfully went in for my appointment, and after trying on 10 gowns that I absolutely despised, I finally tried on THE ONE. It's true...you know the dress when you put it on. It had EVERYTHING that I'd ever imagined. The only problem was that it was two sizes too small. No problem...just order it in the right size, right? Well, my consultant told me that since it is discontinued, it can't be ordered and must be purchased as a floor item. Annnnd it would be 50% off original price!!! I decided to go home to think about it. Today is the next day...I can't get that dress out of my mind!! My sister is adamant that I shouldn't buy a dress that is two sizes too small, but we still have 7 months and I'm absolutely adamant that I'll be able to get into the dress no matter what. What do you think??

@Sunshine the correlation between height and weight depends on several factors, including muscle tone and one's height but in any event...

44 pounds to lose in seven months is *a lot.* I got great results from Weight Watchers four years ago IMO, and I lost 40 pounds over nine months. A bit of weight gain/fluctuation is part of the weight loss process; and you won't know until ex post facto from exactly what part of your body you'll lose the weight.

You also won't know what health issues might arise. For example: a few weeks after I bought my (off-the-floor, apparently discontinued) wedding gown, I drew entry into the NYC marathon. Two months ago yesterday while on a run, I tripped and broke three bones in my ankle and foot. I was completely laid up for the better part of two months and I'll be in PT/rehab through mid-November. I had my first fitting on Tuesday and fortunately everything went well, though I could have easily pigged out while in bed and gained 10 pounds.

    Caveat emptor.

@Danielle, I did say *about* meaning it could differ person to person. I agree that Weight Watchers works extremely well and had success on it, too. However, wedding stress is real and it hinders weight loss. Though not an impossible goal, it would probably be difficult and seems silly to put yourself through that extra stress for a dress, IMO.

I would definitely call around to those that carry that designer and see if any of them have it in your size or larger

I'd keep looking. There are literally thousands and thousands of dress designs. Now that you know what you like, you can look specifically for a dress like the one you tried on and loved.

Definitely keep looking and make a note of that dress. You might be able to find it used online in a larger size or like others said, order it from another shop new. I lost 20 pounds and only lost 1 dress size-and barely at that even. Sure everyone is different but no matter how you chop it up, you're gonna have a lot of weight to lose and you don't need one more thing to stress over closer to the wedding date.

Personally I wouldn't do it. I'd exhaust every avenue to find that dress in the right size though! Don't add stress on yourself to loose weight I know I have been stress eating.

Buying it puts too much pressure on you for you to lose the weight to fit in it which can be stressful eta- its very possible for you to lose the weight but you'd be heartbroken if you didn't lose it on time. I'm pretty sure you can find it elsewhere or something similar!

I would love to say to you "go get that dress"...but you will be under pressure to lose some weight and you might not lose weight where you want.

Soooo....I'm wondering why they showed you a dress that was discontinued and too small. For sure Google the dress and see if it is available somewhere else in your size.

Your perfect dress is still out there!! Be brave and keep looking...and don't settle!!

I can tell you 2 sizes is not hard to lose , of course we all say that .. but if you really really want that dress you will lose that weight (do you really need to lose the weight though? ) Also is it your first time trying on wedding dresses? if it is i think you should still look around more, im sure there is others out there and if not you can always go back to that dress... thats just my opinion.

Buy one that fits now! Smiley smile

I was in a sort of funny situation last year in my friends wedding. I was one of two bridesmaids, we picked out our own style/dress.

I got mine at Nordstrom rack or marshalls for maybe 40$ and it fit but had wiggle room which I was so excited about cuz you know, WEDDING FOOD.

Day of wedding, I'm dressed ready to go. The other bridesmaid who just got back from an all inclusive vacation is freaking out because her dress wouldn't even come near to closing in the back, maybe ten inches. She said it was gaining ten pounds on vacation but really I don't think that's even possible. We switched dresses. Mine was tight on her but closed. I am smaller than her but could barely relax my stomach in her dress in order for it to close and she spent 200$ on it!!!!

Moral of story. Buy a dress that fits now not what size you possibly could be seven months from now!

My dress designer's website had a gown finder where you could enter the style name and it would pull up where you could go in your area to see it. Maybe try that and see if a local store has the same dress in a larger floor sample?

Have you looked at preowned wedding dress online stores? It's possible there's another bride out there that is closer to your size who is trying to sell that very dress!

Also, contact stores that buy discontinued sample dresses and see if they have it in stock. Locally, we have Vows (bridepower.com) and they have their stock online, but you might have one closer

Your dream dress should compliment the body and spirit you already possess, not encourage you to alter yourself to the gown!

You will have enough stress planning the wedding without having to try and lose 2 dress sizes. Don't do that to yourself. You may not be able to even lose sizes in the areas that matter (like boobs and hips). If that store still has it then others will too. Look around and see if you can find it in the right size

Can it be let out? And maybe given a corset back (unless it already has one lol)? There are different things that can be done to let it out two sizes if it is possible. I personally would put the money down and then talk to some seamstresses and see if they think it can be done. If it turns out they can't do it then look into other dresses from them.

Honestly I think it's a really bad idea. Maybe if you're a really heavy set person and typically have an easy time losing weight that's possible, but not worth risking it. Did you try searching for the dress in your size online? You might be able to find it previously worn which is basically what off the rack is so it's worth a try.

It's not impossible to lose two sizes. I lost two sizes (about 18lbs for me) in about 4 months of clean eating and working out. But I also don't know that I'd want to count on that for something as important as my wedding dress.

I'd speak to a seamstress and see if it can be taken out two full sizes. Don't go the "I'm going to lose weight route." Too risky. In fact, now that you know what you love, I'd suggest you keep looking. Just show consultants the gown you love and let them go to work for you. Please, don't order a dress that's one size too small, let alone a dress that is two sizes too small.

Look around for the dress on preowned wedding dress sites in your size. I personally wouldn't want the pressure of not fitting! What is the designer/style? There might be very similar styles you can look into as well.
