Should I Say Yes to the Perfect (Two Sizes Too Small) Dress??????

FutureMrsWhite, on September 8, 2017 at 1:56 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 46

Since the day my FH proposed, I've dreaded going shopping for a wedding gown and planned to go sometime in Oct/Nov. But since so many people insist that I go early, I went yesterday. I dreadfully went in for my appointment, and after trying on 10 gowns that I absolutely despised, I finally tried on THE ONE. It's true...you know the dress when you put it on. It had EVERYTHING that I'd ever imagined. The only problem was that it was two sizes too small. No problem...just order it in the right size, right? Well, my consultant told me that since it is discontinued, it can't be ordered and must be purchased as a floor item. Annnnd it would be 50% off original price!!! I decided to go home to think about it. Today is the next day...I can't get that dress out of my mind!! My sister is adamant that I shouldn't buy a dress that is two sizes too small, but we still have 7 months and I'm absolutely adamant that I'll be able to get into the dress no matter what. What do you think??

Find the style and manufacturer of the dress and see if it is really discontinued. They want you to buy the floor dress because it will nearly guarantee alterations or that if you don't fit in the dress down the line, you will be shopping for a new one.

Do yourself a favor - don't buy a dress off the rack that is that much too small.

I forgot to mention that they will hold it for 25% down. And I could use it for a credit for another gown "on the floor" if I change my mind.

2 sizes is a lot to lose, are you sure you want the pressure of that on top of planning? Also - if you have the designer and style number, you might be able to find the dress at another salon or maybe online? There's also preowned wedding dresses? Just a thought

I would try to look for that dress elsewhere.

Call around and see if another bridal shop carries that dress in your size.

Ehhh this is a gamble that I'm not sure I'd be willing to take if I was you.

With so much other stress related to the wedding, I certainly wouldn't want to add one more thing to that list, which, if I wasn't able to lose the weight, would really put me in a shitty situation closer to the wedding.

I would keep looking, there are so many different dresses and different styles. Maybe try going a different shop to see if they have something you love even more than you can get in your size.

Ask if the shop has a seamstress that could do alterations to make it fit. You cant/should not buy a dress with the expectations to lose weight. Most dresses should have enough extra fabric to be let out a size, and there may be another simple fix to make it work--such as a corset back or something.

If a seamstress cant make it work, then your sister is right that you should not purchase that dress...even though it is discontinued, find the dress maker and style number. Other stores may have a sample in your size or you may be able to purchase it used in your size.

I wouldn't do this. That's a lot of weight to lose, and a lot of pressure to lose it. IMO, it's not worth it. Keep looking.

Many moons ago I bought a dress 1-2 inches too small. I was really thin at the time, living off of black beans of other cheap college food haha. Now, when it's time to plan, I had to sell it. I knew I couldn't suck it in that much all day. Plus if I ate, I'd feel sick it was so tight. So no, I wouldn't recommend it. It's a lot of pressure and even if it just fits, it won't be comfy!

@Cayela - you are welcome! I just don't want happen to you what happened to another friend of mine. She got a dress 2 sizes too small, and it never fit in the bust even after letting it out as much as possible and her losing 20 lbs (which on her 120 lb frame was way too much!) She had to get another dress in the end and was devastated since she was already out 1K on the dress she thought was the one.

Come to find out, the style wasn't discontinued. They just wanted to get rid of the floor model since it needed repairs.

2 sizes?? That's a lot. It's not impossible, but its much more than like 10 pounds ya know? Unless you are confident that you could get it altered to your current size, i wouldn't risk it.

If it's two sizes too small, it's not the perfect dress.

Awh man! I was hoping that WW would say, "yeah girl, use that for motivation to love those pounds." But noooooo. :-) It's a 2015 style and I've looked and called around all day to see if other shops have this dress in my size. I even called a shop in Canada. No luck. It's hard finding a spectacular size 20 wedding gown for a voluptuous vixen such as myself. After reading your suggestions, I may have to go back to the drawing board...or fitting room in this case. Thanks for your suggestions!

I would do as others have said, call around to other stores to see if they have it. I would NOT buy one 2 sizes too small. It also seems a little shady that they didn't tell you it was discontinued until after you had fallen for it.

You could see about getting it let out, or lose some weight. Neither of those options are as easy as they sound, though, depending on the dress. Do what you think you can do.

I would say try another bridal shop and see if they have something similar to what you like.

    I'm a two dress bride.

I bought way too early, off the rack. It was a 10.

At that time, I had gained about 20lbs. I'm a small framed person, so you could tell every pound I'd gained and where it went.

I got tired of being in the comfortable, relationship zone so I started working out again and eating clean. FH and I both just got too comfortable, but have gone back to being healthier together.

That being said, when I bought my second dress 7 months later, I ordered a 6. It still has to be taken in, but it fits. The original 10 falls off of me.

If you are the size now that you normally are, I'd say definitely don't buy that dress. If you did something like I did with relationship weight, it's possible...but it's a ton of work.

Definitely wouldn't get it as motivation. Even if you're successful at losing weight, there's no guarantee you'll lose the weight in the places you need to make the dress fit. I might get it if it could be altered to fit, but that seems like it could be difficult.

One size is about 22 lbs. 44 lbs to lose before April is a shit ton. Definitely don't do it. Not worth it.
