Short Brides! Help with wedding dress!

Corrie, on January 7, 2020 at 9:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24
So to start I'm a Tom boy type never wear dresses always Jean's flannels leggings boots hoodies etc. I loved the rue de siene avril as it was different and I wanted to wow my fiance by wearing something form fitting for the one day ( I'm very self conscious normally loose clothes mainly ) but it's way out of my price range I found a knock off and have been talking with the seller went to go through with the purchase told her my height and she said I'm not tall enough for the design it will look weird so 7 months out about to start serious training in 2 weeks at a new job where I will have zero time to wedding plan, I'm back to square one in my search and all the form fitting dresses I've tried on I just dont love. I'm debating trying on some other fits but I'm afraid I'll drown in them do to my height especially bc I feel like even the form fitting ones make me look dawrfish and disproportionate I know alot of it is it not being fitted but wondering what other short brides have gone for. my shoulders are a bit wide and my bust is larger in proportion wondering if maybe an A line would work? what have you short brides worn? I prefer long sleeves but included 2 dresses I've tried on for an idea of what I've tried Short Brides! Help with wedding dress! 1

I'm about 5'1" and this (drowning or being engulfed by the skirt specifically) was one of my concerns when I was dress shopping too.

When I was shopping around stores, I had tried on sheath and a-line dresses - I think the dress is your first pic is one I was actually interested in - but I preferred the look of sheath dresses when shopping in store. Oddly enough, I think the dress I went with in the end is technically an a-line skirt (I ended up buying a custom top and skirt from a shop on Etsy) and it didn't engulf me at all and even gave me a little waist!

Is it not possible for stores to shorten the dresses slightly in alterations?

Based on pictures alone, I think the dress in your second picture...Which I think is an a-line? I'm also a tom-boy who knows jack about this stuff...Looks great on you, so I would lean more towards something like that. Smiley smile

I’m 5’1 and I’m going with a mermaid shape. I tried on the ballgown and the A- line and I did feel consumed by fabric LOL

Thanks love problem was from far away it makes me look short and stout! I'm leaning toward it being very I'll fitted and from far away all the extra fabric in the sleeves and waist created a larger silhouette.bc you cant see how it's big on me but I'm not sure. I did like it just didnt love it I'll include pics showing the extra fabric and the far away silhouette excuse my face 😂 I its disconcerting from afar so just hoping it's the extra fabric. If I had to guess, I'd say it's the extra fabric.
I felt the same way in some of the dresses I tried on as they were HUGE on me (some had me pinned, pillows stuffed in the back, etc.).

Some of my "stylists" even pulled the fabric back and held it in place, so that's something that may help with getting the illusion of it being fitted while you're searching.

I think there are also petite gowns, though I'm not sure how many of them stores have to try on. :c

This is the dress I went with. I'm 5'4 so not as short as some others but still consider myself on the shorter side.
However, I totally understand where you are coming from. I loved the fit and flare style, it's kind of like a mermaid but just flows a little softer than a mermaid does at the bottom (I think lol). Anyway, I tried some on and hated how they looked on me because It didn't sit on the body like I felt it should have with someone taller. After that, I figured an A line or flowy dress. I never expected to look good in this style if ball gown. It's more of a mix between A line and ball gown and I don't think it over takes me too much. But just be careful cause some did, you just have to find the right style that sits on your body best.
I hope this helped Smiley smile

The second one is a mermaid. I went with a fit and flare (like a trumpet or mermaid, but it starts to float away from the body at the hips rather than the thighs ( mermaid) or knees (trumpet). A lines and ballgown ate me. Here's me in my dress. It's a sample so it's tight and long. I ordered a custom length. Short Brides! Help with wedding dress! 6

That dress looks amazing on you I love it! see I'm kinda thinking aline bc I do have bigger shoulders maybe if I found that compromise in a line it would even it out even with my height

I am steering clear of ballgown for sure as well I know I can't carry it but was thinking maybe a smaller aline would maybe work?

See I felt the same but I've only tried on mermaid or trumpet and I haven't found anything I love or feel is right so I'm thinking of going back into a shop open minded and trying more silhouettes to see if maybe it's just not the right thing for me even though its what I initially wanted but afraid of drowning in fabric

    Hi Corrie,

I'm 5'3", I had the same problem, I chose a Stella York, style 6979, if you care to Google it, it's a fit and flare, and I still had to have it hemmed, good luck, and congratulations!!

I think the second was a mermaid or fit and flare I'm also lost in this lol I only know bc I've been told I cant have a bigger skirt bc of my height but I've looked into aline and they can be smaller not huge so I'm thinking I'll at least try one on see how I feel. and thanks I liked.it but from afar with it being so big I felt like it made me look dwarfish I know its hard to see the vision when its not fitted but for us short girls its 10x harder I think when everything is standard size.

I think you could do several "styles" of gowns. i dont believe that it boils down to the style or shape, but rather the dress overall. beading can make some brides look shorter and more bulky while plain dresses often elongate the body. some shorter gals look excellent in sheath and a-line dresses but others look best in ball gowns and mermaids (i LOVE the second dress you posted and do not think it makes you look short or stout at all). my sister in law is 5'2ish and wore a ballgown which turned out beautifully with her petite body. i, on the other hand, am 5'3 and very curvy. im going with a mermaid and wouldnt have it any other way. i tried on tons of styles though and will attach photos of different styles! id say for your height it might be best to avoid a long train. but once again, its your day and im no expert! you will look beautiful regardless. Agreed. :c
I kind of expected some issues, I think, which is why I opted to get a dress made to my measurements after I couldn't find / didn't 100% like anything I had tried on in stores. It takes longer (mine took about 6 months) and costs a little more, but it was so worth it in the end.

I am 5'0 tall. I had a really hard time finding the dress I like, I finally found mine. I originally looked for Fit and Flare with off the shoulder straps. However, I ended with A Line, somewhat Deep V. I brought my 4" heels with me at the time, and I did look nice in that dress. I am just now waiting for the dress to arrive. It's hard to find anything when you are short. Good luck!

I'm 5'2, so of course I had to do my research on cuts that are flattering to the petite bride before I went dress shopping. A-line dresses are supposed to be flattering to shorter brides, as are column dresses and empire-waist dresses. Trumpet and mermaid dresses are also said to be flattering on petite women.

If I may make a more detailed recommendation for you, I would suggest an a-line or column dress with a sweetheart or V-cut neckline and a cinched/ruched waist to enhance your figure. You could probably find something like that with sleeves, if that is what you prefer.

These are a few you might like (found at David's Bridal, which I think is located throughout the United States).

Best of luck! I hope you find the dress that's just waiting to be worn by you!! Smiley laugh You should keep us all posted when you find your dress! I'd love to see what you end up going with!!

You may already know this, but if not, be advised that the cost of alterations can get REALLY expensive. I got "blessed" with the physique of a twelve-year-old Smiley amazing and even the smallest size that could be ordered was too big. I knew it would have to be altered, but I about had a stroke when the seamstress told me that the total cost of alterations (roughly $500-800 to shorten the hem, take in the bodice, and add a bustle) would be nearly equal to the cost of my dress. Of course, it all depends on what you'll need to have done to the dress; that will dramatically increase or decrease the cost. Just be mindful of that. I had no idea alterations would cost so much, and I ended up being frustrated with myself for having spent so much of my wedding budget solely on the dress I would be wearing.
