Sheet cakes - Costco or Sam's Club

ELFie, on June 26, 2014 at 12:13 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

We're going with a very small cake (8 inches in diameter), which will be just for the two of us. It is done by a local bakery, and we've ordered it before for small celebrations. It's usually $40, but they have constant Groupons, bringing it down to $20. I put a picture of it below.

For the guests, we'll be bringing sheet cakes over the day before from Costco or Sam's Club. The venue keeps it in their fridge then cuts it in the kitchen before putting single servings out for guests. I will not have any type of display cake, just one for us and pieces for guests. This should cost about $150 or less.

We have family who are members at each chain, so we'll need to go with someone to order them. I believe Sam's does half or full sheet cakes, while Costco only does half size. Is this your experience? Does a full sheet cake really serve up to 90ish people? Are you planning something similar? Thanks!!

When we were planning to do cake, we were planning to get three full ones from Sam's Club for 250 people. My church gets cakes for most of their special functions from Sam's and everyone seems to like them.

@Jenn - thanks! We will have around 190 people, so two sounds about right compared to your plans.

I was at a wedding last week where the cake was delish! They cut razor-thin pieces, so we didn't get a lot, but I thought that was another good money-saving option.

Hands down - Costco! They have the best cakes. Everyone is always surprised they are from there. They taste like a more expensive cake or even a cake from a bakery.

My family is addicted to Costco. I've never been there.

I have no advice, but I wanted to tell you that is one sweet little cake you and FH are sharing. I love it.

@Ashley, good thing I included a pic so we can get extra hungry before a lunch break!

Costco sounds like the winner so far!

Costco has the better cakes, even if they only do half sheet. They have a layer of mousse in the middle!!! Soooo good.

I don't remember ever having a SAMS cake, but I can tell you that Costco cakes are MONEY (as in...DELICIOUS)...

Anywho, I saw go buy a small cake from each store, invite friends and family over for "tastings" and see what people like best...

I actually like Sam's over costco. They have multiple frosting choices and cake flavors

It seems people like both, though there are a few more votes for Costco. I've seen the cake options for Sam's online, but I can't find any info online about Costco's; I'll have to go there with a member to check out the options ahead of time.

I've never had cake from Cotsco but I love Sam's cakes. I always use them for my cakes and cupcakes. I ordered cupcakes from them for my sweets table at my wedding and they were a definite hit!

Ive gotten several full sheet cakes from Sam's and they are good cakes and will feed up to 190 people depending on who slices it. But the only problem I have with Sam's is they are a little heavy handed on the icing before u actually get to the cake. Maybe it was just the person doing icing that day but all others were good.
