Self conscious about wedding dress shopping?

Rebecca, on September 7, 2021 at 9:18 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

Hey ladies!

Anyone else feeling a little self conscious about dress shopping? My mom and best friend want to go with me and I know they won't judge me, but I'm worried about not feeling comfortable during the process. I know I'll have time to lose weight before the actual wedding, but I'm still worried about how I'll look while trying dresses on! Anyone else have a similar issue?

I was a little nervous going into the shopping experience because I’d spent months and months looking at wedding dresses, and all the models in the photos were like a size zero, so I was scared I’d hate the way MY body looked in all those dresses that looked so good on them. But I just told myself “you’re not going to look like those models and no one is expecting you to”. I went in with the attitude that I wanted to find a dress I felt both beautiful and myself in.. not a dress that made me look “perfect”. And I ended up having very positive experiences! The few few dresses I tried on was a strange experience… just seeing yourself in such a different light. But once you get used to it, it’s a lot of fun!

I agree with Cece, I've lost about 5-7kg since I shopped for my wedding dress. I was a bit nervous that I wouldn't like how I looked in a wedding dress, because I was almost at my heaviest-ever weight. I was also worried that, if I was further along in my weight loss journey that maybe I would have picked something else. And... looking back? MAYBE I would have? But I had an image in my head for a long time of how I wanted my dress to look on my wedding day, and it's exactly what I bought, so I think it's very unlikely I would have picked anything other than the style I did.

I was actually more nervous when I picked my dress up - probably more than when I first went shopping, because I knew I was a lot closer to my goal weight for my wedding day and I was terrified I'd not like what I saw. But I've never seen anything other than love and admiration in my future husband's eyes when he looks at me, irrespective of what size I've been, and I knew on our wedding day, that would be the case even if I turned up in a bin bag.

Reminding myself of that really helped. He loves me for me - and I should love me that way too.

I was mostly self conscious about my chest. I basically look like I’m 12 in that department lol. I was worried I wouldn’t fill it out and that it would ruin it for me. But once I put those dresses on I didn’t think about it! You’re going to look beautiful, and I hope you see that too!

I was very anxious about wedding dress shopping. Being overweight I was afraid nothing would fit right or look right. But let me tell you, the samples fit me well enough to get an idea in how I would look in each one and I felt absolutely beautiful in a few of them! I ended up loving the process and wanted to keep trying on dresses. lol Your consultant should pull dresses that will flatter your body. I hope you enjoy it and find your perfect dress.

Yup! I don't like attention on me in general, and the shops always make a big production of it, so I ordered dresses online to try at home in private with just me and my bestie!

I was super super nervous about dress shopping. I kept putting it off for months because I wanted to lose weight, but that didn’t happen. I was so so so terrified that I was going to look horrible in every dress.

    That definitely didn’t happen.
To be fair, I will say that I did try on some dresses that I looked really bad in. But I tried on WAY more dresses that made me feel beautiful. One thing I did was tell my stylist up front about specific areas that I wanted to cover more or draw attention away from. She was able to pull dresses that flattered me so well and looked beautiful.
I think you’ll find that dress shopping is actually really fun and a good confidence booster Smiley smile
Also, some places will have the stylist help you get in and out of your dresses. That can be a little uncomfortable standing in front of a mirror half naked with them (especially while they try to make small talk), but you get used to it after a few times. And I’m sure they are more than used to it lol.
