Self catering ideas

Before I even ask my question, I'll get all of the typical backlash out of the way. We are having 60 people, yes we looked into Italian and BBQ, no they weren't affordable. About $2500 still. Yes our venue allows it, yes we would be getting insurance. Yes, we have professionals. My uncle is an amazing chef and has been featured on shows so he knows what he's doing. No, our family and friends won't be working the day of, we are having people we know who aren't invited, man the stations and we will be paying them. Yes, we have an onsite kitchen and my uncle is extremely into making sure everything is properly handled as he has the equipment to do so. Hopefully that covered all of the bases, now onto the question.

For brides that have done this, what's the easiest route? Taco Bar? BBQ? Snackable entrees? We are trying to decide what would be the best option to serve everyone but still have it be delicious as well as enough food!

I think a pasta bar is easiest. Two types of pastas, two types of sauces, two types of meat (i am assuming meatball and chicken for spaghetti or fettuccine) breadsticks and salad.

Honestly, I think your Uncle would be the best person to ask since he has the experience. Give him a list of dishes you both enjoy and see if they can be comfortably prepared for the amount of guests. Your Uncle may even have some signature dishes he could make.

We are self catering our 160 person wedding much to everyone on WW's horror. lol It can be done. We are doing BBQ, cheesy potatoes, summer slaw, salad and fruit. For cocktail hour we are doing cheese/sausage trays, veggie trays and possibly a popcorn bar.

I think either a taco bar or bbq would be good options. Sometimes pasta bars can be too heavy.

    Good Luck!

I wouldn’t go with BBQ because it’s just too messy. I think pasta or taco bars would be a good idea though!

Definitely talk to your uncle about it. I'm sure he has a lot of ideas. But, before you do that, think about what you like to eat normally and what you imagine eating at your wedding. When you go talk to him, be open to the possibility of completely changing the menu you had in your head. It kind of depends on his personality and your family dynamics, but at lesdt

I've only been to a BBQ wedding out of all your listed options, and it was fine! And I mean real BBQ, messy brisket, sausy chicken, all the fixins, with a self-serve sangria/wine/keg bar. No one got horribly messy and the bride's dress stayed white. The biggest mess was when someone accidentally overfilled their sangria glass!

With that said, choose whichever meal type you (and your guests) like best. Your uncle is in the business, so he knows a good caterer can make anything look easy. I find some appetizers at formal weddings more complicated than a taco at times, so don't worry about what's the "easiest" or the "best," and just pick what tastes good!

Great point! I’m super casual and love things like pizza, tacos, burgers, etc so I’m hoping he thinks that will work

And tacos honestly would probably be the easiest thing! & they’re not as messy as BBQ.
