Self Catering food ideas

Kayla, on February 3, 2020 at 12:28 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9
Hey there! It's been a minute since I have posted on here because life decided to throw us a couple of curve balls! Long story short, my fiance and I were supposed to get married last November. However, early summer we received some news about a personal family matter and decided to postpone the wedding. Basically when we postponed the date I just stopped wedding planning. We already have our venue and photographer and decided to self cater. With it being the start of the new year I picked up planning again since our new date is set for February 13, 2021. I have a couple of new floral appointments coming up, and future hubby and I are narrowing down our dj choice. So next I'm brainstorming what I want our dinner menu to be. We have decided to have the meats catered and have family and friends help with the sides and the rest. We are doing buffet style dinner and wanting southern style food without bbq lol. In y'all's opinion what are some good dinner options for meat and sides.

Good options would be ones that are catered. Asking your friends and family to provide the food for an event that you're hosting is not only rude, but also a huge liability. You don't need a florist or a DJ, but you need food that is safe. I would cut from other places in your budget to afford a proper caterer.

All other "self catering" (it's not really yourself if you are delegating to other people) issues aside, I hope everyone you are counting on to help has volunteered with no asking from you. Catering a wedding is A LOT of work and means friends and family won't get to enjoy your wedding at all. But once a bride or groom asks, then people have all kinds of reasons for feeling obligated and it can really change the whole tone of the relationship.

Source: I have been a family member tasked with working a wedding to help couple save money and it was the worst time many of us have EVER had at a wedding and relationships were irrevocably (so far, it was 3 years ago) affected.

Thanks for your response. However I was simply asking for food suggestions not what people's thoughts were about self catering. I'm not sure how helpful your response was regarding what I was asking for. I appreciate your opinion though!

Ditto PPs, self-catering is a bad and dangerous idea for a number of reasons.

Pinterest has great "feeding a crowd" for just about any cuisine. Anything that can be made in pans is a win for this!

If I were doing a southern buffet for any event (not just a wedding):
Fried Chicken (for efficiency and consistency I'd do a good Vons or similar type)Baked Chicken (for those who want a bit healthier option or just variety)Potato Salad and/or Mashed Potatoes Baked Mac and CheeseGreen Beans/Collard GreensGreen SaladButtermilk Biscuits and/or CornbreadClassic Southern Desserts:Red Velvet cupcakesMini Peach CobblersLemon pound cake

Thank you, for being the first to respond with actual advice I was looking for! Yes we planned on ordering the fried and baked chicken and the second meat option, for safety reasons. But that's what I was wanting food suggestions for sides! We are getting married the day before Valentine's next year and most of the desserts will be store bought or ordered ahead of time for the simple fact that I want the cutsie theme desserts! The mini peach cobblers are such a cute idea! Thank you! I like the thought of doing mashed potatoes as a side but also as like it's own station with all the toppings! Thanks again!

So glad I could help! Stations are also a great idea and interactive. Since most things will.be store bought, going to a Smart N Final or Retaurant Depot or similar store for your commercial grade coolers/ice holders, and chafing dishes should be the only other major thing. I also love getting cute trays and holiday things from the dollar tree for display especially since your date is near valentine's day and the cutesy desserts will be on cutesy displays lol

Yes, my venue has all of that stuff the coolers and chaffing dishes. So really my next big thing would be like the dishes, plates and cups and that sort of thing, I have been looking around! Girl yes! I love the cute trays at Dollar tree! I also like that we were able to pick our new date soon enough where I can do some sale/clearance shopping after this Valentine's day. Target has some pretty things too that I have had my eye on!
