Seamstress cut my dress too short - wedding 7 days away

HRKeaysToBe, on August 10, 2017 at 1:35 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 27

Just went in for my final fitting and the seamstress cut it 2 inches too short. I had 1.5in wedding shoes on for my pinning. They cut it too short...even barefoot it's too short. My wedding is in 7 days and I'm devastated. That was just one of the issues. Sleeves are uneven, etc. She is going to "fix it". She basically told me she is going to re-attach to the bottom what she cut off. It's lace. Then said I can get it on Monday. My wedding is that Friday. I've requested she get it to me tomorrow. We discovered this yesterday. She said she'll let me know later today if she can have it by tomorrow. Im so annoyed and clearly upset. I didn't wait this long for final fitting. She's had the dress for weeks. The week before wedding final fitting was her request. She was a referral and experienced and not cheap. Just wasn't supervising her workers. Would you ask for your money back if it doesn't get fixed properly? I keep thinking about how our pictures are going to turn out. Smiley sad

Girl you better ask for your money back. She failed to deliver the job that she said she was going to do. See first if she can really fix the problem. I don't even know if reattaching will look good. I'm sorry this happened to you! Stay strong your day is a week away

If the dress is not perfect, I would absolutely be requesting compensation. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping you'll be happy with the outcome.

ETA: Would you come back and update us on how things went?

Ask for a refund and see if maybe you can switch your shoes to shorter heels?

I'd ask for my money back for sure! That is ridiculous. I don't know what kind of recourse you'd have regarding this but I'd also expect her to replace the dress if it isn't fixable. I know you don't really have time but if you could find something off the rack?

Also, no idea what kind of material it was, but I know of someone who just had her wedding dress cut too short. She took it elsewhere and they were able to steam it and stretch it out, so maybe see if someone else will give you an emergency consultation?

I should've taken a pic yesterday and didn't. I was stunned and didn't know what to do. Just completely at a loss. She brought out a strip of lace from my dress and said we can just sew this on to match. If any words came out of my mouth I think I would've started crying.

This is the before. The piece she brought out from the bottom wasn't that much. So I don't know what happened because they definitely took more off than the strip she showed me. She even said it was bad and asked who pinned me...she pinned me.

The top part of the sleeves have about 2in of extra lace showing underneath the lace. It looks sloppy.

OMG girl, I am so sorry! Where did you buy your dress?

Not ideal, but see if you can find something off the rack just in case. Corset backs are much more forgiving and typically require much less altering. Definitely get your money back! Did you sign any sort of release saying they weren't responsible for mess ups?

Poor Thing! I had this happen last week and I truly felt my dress was "ruined" which it was because the tailor had to buy my dress from me and give me my deposit back. I would go back to her with a "witness" or record her on your phone (nonchalantly) admitting it was her fault and that it can not be fixed. Tell her you need her to buy the dress from you so you can go buy another one. If she refused you can take her to small claims court. I was lucky enough to find a dress for $100 off of facebook barter sight. I am so sorry that happened to you. It is so upsetting and stressful plus you don't get that time back.

This is a bride's nightmare especially this close to your wedding day. I am so so sorry! Your dress is beautiful and I am hoping she can fix it for you. This would be a case where I would definitely ask for all of my money back. Even if they are able to fix it, they damaged it to begin with...Keep us posted OP. Sending you good vibes and hugs today.

Omg she sounds like a disaster. She didn't even remember pinning your dress and told you it looked sloppy? That is unacceptable. I would let her try to fix it first before talking about compensation. Your first priority is getting the dress done in time for your wedding. I would also probably start shopping for a backup dress off the rack just in case. It sucks but I don't know if you can trust this woman. So sorry Smiley sad

Thank you all for the suggestions, kind words and support. I will definitely keep you posted on this. I try to learn something or forewarn others when things go bad. I can definitely suggest always having someone go with you to dress shopping or fittings, even if they are not in your wedding. I thought I could shop and get alterations by myself, but really I should've had someone with an objective mind go with me. Also, I should've been adamant about a sooner fitting or went somewhere else.

Just an update. I was supposed to get my dress back this coming up Monday, but I strongly requested a Friday pick up. So I picked up my dress yesterday and it fits a lot better. They re-attached the strip of lace they trimmed off the bottom. It doesn't look great, but It's likely I'll be the only one to tell. I'll post a wedding pic in a week! I'm pretty happy about the dress since they fixed it. I did not ask for a discount. I probably should've, but she was really nice about it and did a decent clean up on the dress.

Breathe babe! Your dress is not ruined, I personally think the last pic you shared was GOREGOUS. You looked beautiful. I don't think anyone will notice the bottom being reattached but you. I would probably let it go--even if it would really upset me. Focus on the day, NOT THE DRESS. The wedding is not the dress. Marrying your fiance with all your friends and family will. Understandably, it's okay to be upset--but breathe, breathe, breathe. It will be okay.

I'm glad your dress is fixed! And yes, most people will be looking at your smiling face instead of your feet! Congrats, you're almost there!

I am glad they were able to fix it. Nobody will notice it being all the way down by your feet. Can't wait to see your BAM!
