Scammed By Wedding Coordinator

Viki, on February 27, 2020 at 1:50 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

Last week I received a mass email from our wedding coordinator saying that she has changed her phone number and provided her newest number. I email her back thanking her for the email and asking when we could talk about the timeline for the day of the wedding. I didn't hear anything back. Three days ago I send another email, still didn't hear anything back. Today I texted the phone number she provided and I still haven't heard anything. I started to Google her business and found that in the last two months she has received a ton of negative reviews on Wedding Wire, The Knot, Google, and Yelp. All the reviews say she disappeared after receiving the deposit. I feel like an idiot because the asked for a lot as a deposit. Her overall cost was 800 and she asked for 600 as a deposit. Against my better judgement I went with her because the overall cost was about 300 dollars less than the other coordinators I had contacted. She had great reviews when we booked her in July 2019, now I wonder if those were fake. We paid her through Venmo, I'm not sure how we can go about getting our money back and finding a reputable coordinator.

She did, the wording in the contract says, "I will be on call for you 24/7 via text message."

I would get a lawyer. Do you have wedding insurance?

Luckily we do. I want to see if Venmo can flag her account as fraudulent, but I'm not sure how that works.

I’m so sorry that has happened to you. You can contact Venmo and they’ll freeze the account if they feel it’s fraud. If your in NJ I could put you in contact with my wedding planner, she’s awesome and about the same price.

Thank you so much, that's very sweet of you. Unfortunately, I'm in Northern VA, my fiance works in theater so We going to see if one of his friends that does stage management can do the coordinating.

Her wanting to be paid through Venmo should have been the first red flag and I would have stopped it right there. You can contact Venmo but I am sure she probably already has another account set up and is still doing the same thing to other couples. Since you have a contract, you can contact a lawyer and see if they think you can do anything but it is also possible she didn't even give you the correct name. Sorry you got taken and hopefully everything works out!

We’ve paid our baker through Venmo as well so I didn’t really think too much about it. She gave us the option of PayPal too, but Venmo was just easier.

We paid most of our vendors through Venmo also. I think Venmo will let you report it as fraudulent and can maybe help get the money back. Good luck! I’m sorry you’re dealing with this l!

FYI PayPal and Venmo are owned by the same company so they probably have the same policies for dealing with fraud. I’d reach out to Venmo, they should be able to at least freeze her account

How awful! Hopefully you can get this all sorted with venmo and report her through WW and other sites that she's using to promote her "business". If you end up wanting a DOC, there are a couple near DC that I've researched around that exact price range. Good luck!
