Saving that top tier/a slice/or cupcake for your 1 year wedding anniversary..?

Megan, on December 4, 2013 at 10:39 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 40

My husband and I had 200 cupcakes & a 6 in cutting cake at our wedding. We got rid of all the cupcakes (whatever was left over) and stuck our cutting cake in the freezer for our 1 year. Well I've heard different stories about it not tasting so well (i guess it depends on how you package it when putting it in the freezer). Well I wanted to do something a little different. Our 6 month wedding anniversary is coming up this month (the 29th) along with our 3 1/2 year dating anniversary (the 25th). I was thinking about unfreezing it and eating it for our 6 months. It's a 2 layer red velvet cake with a layer of cream cheese frosting. I've been dying to eat it.. Do you plan on doing something different with the cake then waiting a year??

My first wedding the cake was nasty a year later! I say do what you want!

We plan to save a couple cupcakes and eat those on our anniversary. Not sure how cupcakes will hold up over a year though. Its more the thought that counts kind of thing.

    We didn't.

My ex and I had - wrapped it up in a billion layers of saran wrap and foil, put it back in the box (which was also sealed) and stuck in a deep freezer. It was still gross. Actually the very center area of the (round) cake was okay, but rest of it was stale and just not good.

DH and I didn't save our cake because I saw no point in wasting a perfectly good cake. We ate a piece of it on Sunday and it was DELICIOUS. Much better than it would have been a year from now :-)

I have my top tier but my cake vendor is a great friend of mine and said that she'd gladly make us another cake if we wanted to clear this one.

My mom saved hers, and my sister saved hers, but both got eaten while they were on their honeymoon by various family members so they didnt get to eat it on the one year. I plan to save some but im not sure we will actually eat it

We had something similar, 85 cupcakes and a small 6-incher on top for us to cut. We did not end up keeping that piece. Actually my MIL asked me no less then 5 minutes after we cut into it if we were going to keep it (yes I found this a little rude) but logistically it would have been really hard for us to keep it having a DW and all.

Had we kept it I DEFINITELY would have looked forward to digging in a year later!

Can I come over for cake? I love red velvet. Yum.

I'll probably wait unless I find the cake hasn't been packed well for the freezer. I sent mine home with a friend and haven't picked it up yet. It sounds like you have multiple reasons to celebrate so if cake sounds good, thaw that baby out and enjoy.

We saved ours but I worry because my hubby constantly asks when we can eat it and tries to sneak peaks at it. DUDE! We just got married last month. The local bakery that made our cake said they would reconstruct our top layer at the 1 year mark if it became frostbitten or nasty so yay!

Here's a picture of the cake after we cut into it and smashed it into each other's face so actually we didn't get to try it. But we had red velvet cupcakes as well... okay now i'm craving red velvet anything right now. I think it's time to pull it out the freezer and see what it taste like lol

FH doesn't eat sweets, no need in saving the cake. I want to make sure the guests eat it up on our wedding day or take some home if they like.

Mine has been in the freezer since the evening of the wedding and we haven't touched it since. I haven't even checked the box lol. It would be nice to take it our to have more room in our freezer as well

@FutureMrsHicks - We had a HUGE amount of cupcakes left over. I was able to take some to my husband's work, my mom's work, extra for neighbors and bring some to my work as well.

I hadn't thought about this part yet but now that I have...I think I'll want us to keep it and see what it's like one our 1 year anniversary. FH rarely eats sweets so I know it won't be hard to wait that long. I think I'd like to do it more for reliving a small part of our day Smiley smile

I'm eating mine in 5 days. Wasn't the actual top tier (which would have been way too big), our baker made us another small cake for us to freeze. It's in foil, then saran wrap, then more foil. Here's to hoping it's good!

My parents have the top tier of their wedding cake and kept it frozen until their 25th wedding anniversary. They pulled out to display for their anniversary party then wrapped it back up and suck it in the freezer again. My friends parents did the same for their 25th.

I didn't think you were supposed to actually eat it.

Our baker actually gives us a free replica of the top tier on our wedding day so we don't have to freeze it.

OMG Letitsnow after 25 years I would not WANT to eat it. Cool idea though. We have not decided but I think we will keep it and maybe reorder an identical one from baker just in case

My first wedding cake top tier was disgusting a year later, as others have said, even though it was well-wrapped. We only got a cake big enough to serve our guests at the wedding (and still had quite a bit left over), but one of the reasons I went with my particular baker was that she will do a fresh replica of the top tier for our 1-year anniversary at no charge (well, included in her very reasonable price). It will also be red velvet!

I'm not even really having a top layer to save so we will not be doing this. We're doing donuts as our dessert and only having a small cake to cut. We are however doing one of those wine/love boxes. So we will have a bottle of wine with love letters to open on our anniversary and to me wine>stale cake lol
