Saving fabric from wedding dress alterations

Alyssa, on September 11, 2019 at 4:42 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10
Hi All,

I’m going to have to get my wedding dressed altered a lot - I’m 4’11” and my dress was made to fit a supermodel! Needless to say there is going to be a lot of leftover fabric. I was curious if any brides have asked their seamstresses to save the fabric so they could use for scrapbook, etc. I might gift my flower girl a denim jacket and thought it would be cute to see some of the leftover lace from my dress onto it.

My bridal salon gave me the extra fabric (it wasn't much) just in case it would be needed during the preservation process. I didn't even think to ask. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I love your idea!! Heck I’d love to put a piece of my dress onto my own clothing to be able to wear my dress again in a sense! I’m 5’9 so there was no cutting of material on my dress so no scraps to worry about.

I never even knew of this until yesterday when I was asked if I wanted to keep the leftover fabric. I said no because I didn't know what I would do with it. I love your idea of the jacket with a little of the lace in it somehow.

You’re so tiny you could probably have them make a shawl out of the leftover fabric. But you definitely should ask for it back. I’d actually be concerned if it was a problem.

Not my wedding dress but my florists asked me to ask my bridesmaids if they were gonna cut their dresses so we could use extra fabric to wrap bouquets. Bridesmaids gave me fabric and I took it to him! I’m so excited to see them on Saturday 😆 maybe you can do this for your bouquet?

That's a really good idea. It would be sentimental if you gave it to a future daughter or daughter-in-law. You could have it made into a wedding garter for her or sewn into her dress

I'm using my extra fabric to wrap my bouquet with, and as long as they remembered to save it, I plan to wrap the bridesmaids bouquets with suit fabric from FH's slacks (he had a decent amount cut off and I only have 3 bridesmaids). And then I want to wrap the toss bouquet with fabric from the color swatches I ordered for my bridesmaids dresses - there's not a lot of fabric there, but it should be enough for one bouquet.

If you plan to have children and are planning to christen/baptize you could use leftover fabric to make a baptism outfit. Usually those are white and I know it's something my MIL has been thinking about doing with her old wedding dress fabric!

The seamstress asked me if I wanted to keep the scraps, I didn't even think to ask. I wasn't sure what I'd used it for but I kept them. I ended up using some of it on some of the favors, on the card box, and on my bouquet.
