Save The Dates- Magnets vs Postcards

Mrs. B, on July 13, 2012 at 8:58 AM Posted in Planning 1 21

My fellow brides to be! Smiley smile What are some thoughts on save the date postcards? I thought it was a neat idea but i know mostly EVERYONE uses magnets. I'm debating between the two (or if i can find some other form i like) and are just wondering what everyone's thoughts are.

I used magnets and I have gotten more compliments on them than anything else!! Everyone loved that they could slap it on the fridge or other metal piece and it was a constant reminder.

    Is budget a concern?

With the right sale link you can get 100 postcards from vistaprint for $6.50

or 100 small magnets mounted on postcards and sent in envelopes for $33.

Just a DIY idea: My friend order her save the dates as post cards and went to Hobby Lobby and got a magnet roll. We cut the magent to pieces and put it on the back of the card. It turned out great. The magnet roll was about $9 for a huge sheet. They had smaller rolls.

Still kind of a lot when I need 75-100! I am working off a pretty short budget of about 7k. I feel like that money would be better spent on venue or linen you know?

I love magnet STDs but in the end, we chose budget over preference here. My friend used MagnetStreet.com which came out great and they have a lot of options- that is where I was going to order ours from. VP also has a lot of options and I have heard they have good quality too.

And depending on how many/how crafty you are, I was sent these links by two friends who made their own:

    http://fortheloveofskinny.com/2011/04/15/diy-save-the-date-magnets/

    http://www.projectwedding.com/wedding-ideas/diy-magnet-save-the-date

In the end for me, it was cheaper for me to just pay someone to make mine than buy all the supplies if I did them since we are having a smaller guest list.

The magnets don't come mounted on the postcards. You just need to order the small magnets and the postcards and put them together with glue dots or double sided tape.

ALSO there are links out there that give you 25 FREE small magnets

and 100 FREE postcards... so the prices below is what you pay in S&H (that is how I got my prices listed above in my first post)

To get these prices, you need to do 3 separate orders. You just complete and order then click the sale link and make Another order.

    1st order

    100 free postcard from vistaprint.com

    25 free magnets

    add white envelopes (thin)

    $12.01

and you can then put in a 2nd order for 25 more FREE magnets = $7.61

then your 3rd order for 50 more small magnets would cost $7 and S&H = $12.67

    3 orders = 100 postcards and 100 magnets, 100 envelopes = $32.29

That is like saying your Save the date Magnets are $0.32

and you are getting Free Postcards to put them on, and Free envelopes (thin).

    @ Amanda

We have figured out a Loop Hole on how to use your Groupon AND a Retailmenot.com coupon code... so the prices will be 50% off instead of 30% off!!!

Read this to find out how to use the retailmenot coupon with your groupon!!!

    https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/vistaprint-groupon-and-50-discount/2a26552d249eefbe.html

I'm not sure how 100 postcards and 100 magnets would add up, but if you already have a groupon you might as well give it a try. Doesn't hurt to fill your cart and see what the total cost would be.

I'm doing post cards -- they're cheaper, postage is cheaper, and someone can still easily hang it up with tape, a magnet, or a pushpin.

I got my STD Magnets from Vistaprint, but waited until they went on sale and had free shipping for orders over $25. I mis-calculated though and ordered a magnet for every guest, not every address, so I actually have a ton left over. Oops =\

For 200 magnets with shipping I paid $80. You just have to wait for the right deal to come around.

Im sure the cost is different and post cards are cheaper so depends on what you want to spend. Nothing is lost if you do post cards but Magnets are pretty cool as they stay on your fridge.

Beware magnets, everyone who walks by the fridge will see these, so if your sending them to friends, but plan on a B list give that idea up now as those people will know they wern't on your origional list

We did magnets but.... everyone has stainless steel fridges nowadays and magnets don't stick to them! Well, they stuck to ours because we have a cheap SS fridge that's probably not even real steel. Most of our family members couldn't put them on the fridge.

I thought about magnets or postcards but in the end decided on magnets. They will cost more (I think the postage will too) but I still have my best friend's on my fridge from two years ago. I also did the Vistaprint deal on Groupon $17 for $70.
