Sand Ceremony Alternative

wowjunkie, on January 5, 2010 at 8:36 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

I stumbled upon this GREAT idea as an alternative for a sand ceremony - an hourglass ceremony. You get a fillable hourglass and two different colors of sand, pour both in like a typical ceremony, but then the symbolism is that the colors will become more mixed as you turn it, just like your lives will become more entwined as time goes on. I thought it was a SUPER cute idea with a twist on the usual. The only problem I've found so far is that the only hourglasses I've found thus far are a hundred dollars minimum. I'm still searching!

We are doing the sand ceremony as well, and this is definitely a super cute idea! I will be on the hunt and let you know if I find one at a reasonable price. =)

Http://www.justhourglasses.com/index.jsp has much more reasonably priced hourglasses and say that they sell some partially disassembled. I asked for their styles that come that way and how they need to be secured, since the ceremony should end with the first turn of the hourglass!

That is SOO much better than the pouring of the sand into a glass--I LOVE it! Here is another...

Those are the ones I found to begin with and their hourglasses are over $100. I know it's a keepsake, but for serious I don't feel like spending that much on one.

NOOOO the $40 thing is the pretty funnel and pretty containers to hold the sand to begin with and the paper with the ceremony on it.

$40.00 FOR A FUNNEL/CONTAINER/SAND???? Are you kidding me?? I could make a pretty funnel out of construction paper. I'm with you...it is entirely too much to spend on an keepsake. Wow.

Is anything in a wedding reasonably priced? I'm thinking not...lol!

This is not assembled. The unfinished kit with brass engraving plate is $97. That means you just have to stain the wooden base, I think, which should easy and fun. That's the lowest cost I was able to find.

So far that seems like a very reasonable option, Karen, until I hear back from Justhourglasses.com. But if those don't work out it's at least helpful to see all the parts! Maybe if I look up the glass part, then we can make our own frame. However the ones that Karen found ARE a foot tall, so they aren't dinky!

And I've been great! I've been looking for something to do during the ceremony besides just talking, but the unity candle seems really overdone and the sand ceremony just seems kind of...well the same. This seems different enough with a more special meaning to me - and I love the idea of turning it on anniversaries.

On the link I sent you they also sell just the glass part if you want to make your own frame...I forget how much but it's very reasonable. Hope this helps you. It's a beautiful idea.

Here is a site that does the whole shebang along with laser etching with your message (most show invitation wording) on both ends. Those are about $200 but include EVERYTHING and the hourglass is a true 60-minute timer. They also sell individual glasses for various amounts of time/size that are pretty reasonable. They sell them empty and filled, but without frames. Link will take you to just the glass but you can get to the other products from there. http://www.hourglassesonline.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?

We are doing the sand ceremony... The hour glass idea is really cute... for now we have an oval glass container that will be sealed with wax by the officiant.
