Said Yes to the Dress! But have some thoughts...

Molly, on January 5, 2021 at 10:37 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24

So I posted on here before about narrowing down my wedding dress selection and I thought I might have found the one, but I went a different direction and got something different. I'll post pictures below.

My vision: I wanted 2 looks and 2 dresses. Dress 1 for the ceremony is an illusion top, sweetheart neckline, fit and flare with a long train. Something cute and romantic, but appropriate for the church. Dress 2 for the reception is sexy with a very deep plunge, illusion sides, fit and flare, don't care about the train, because this will be none existent or buselled.

After shopping around at stores they tried to convince me to find one dress that does it all, but I haven't found that yet. Something always seems to be missing. Well after this shopping trip I narrowed it down to 2 dresses and I was planning on getting just 1. I loved both of the dresses, bought 1 and plan on getting the other one as well. But now I'm trying to see if I should just stick with the one I bought to make it work for both the ceremony and reception.

My dress as you can see is an Illusion top that is a sweetheart neckline, fit and flare silhouette, illusion sides lined with lace and a pretty train in the back. (Almost everything I want, except for the deep V)

People say you can always take away from a dress but it's harder to add on to a dress. Do you think I can alter the dress to get that deep V and only stick to this dress?

Dress 1: Already purchased

Dress 2: Additional Dress for the Venue. I wouldn't need the veil for this since that would only be for the ceremony. But I just love the fit and the deep V on this one. Do you think I can get the front to look like this for the first dress?

I would contact a seamstress in your area to ask that question. The boutique where you bought it from may have a seamstress on site to help you.

Did you ask them while you were? I know that when I found my dress, I was unsure because I wanted to add to my dress and my consultant told me right away that yes it was possible!

I have made and altered a lot of gowns, but though you could do it with many gowns, I wouldn't with yours. The support for the bra cups on yours is a horizontal reinforcement side to side, and will ot work if split in the middle. The split front deep vee has vertical boning or other stiffening net to keep the 2 sides up, that the first dress lacks, and without it such a complete split would not work. Better to get a second dress, more of an evening dress.

The boutique does not have a seamstress on site, they just have recommendations of people to use.

I asked about it, but the girl who helped me that day was really new and didn't know much. She only recommended a seamstress to use for alterations.

When I was there I was going to purchase the second dress as well, but it's from their private line and the owner must be contacted before putting in the order. So I was waiting until she was back, but now I'm second guessing spending so much money on another wedding dress. I think I'll contact a seamstress to see if they can make it work before deciding on the second dress.

I think that's probably the best thing to do.

The alternative is to pick ip a more plunging neck second dress at a sample sale, for more than half off. Is the second dress the exact one you would want, or would you be open to other plunging V's or ones easily made into them by their structure? and since you want it more for reception dancing, would you be ok with no train, rather than one you jave to bustle the entire time you are wearing it?

I do like that second dress, but it doesn't have to be the exact one, just something similar.

That is such a good idea to look at sample sale so it would be way cheaper! Yes, the second dress I'm looking for would be without a train. I guess it would be more of a formal wear gown and a wedding dress.

I would talk to a seamstress about altering your current dress and just have one. In my opinion the dress you purchased is much prettier than the 2nd dress you posted. The 2nd dress is a little "blah". I am not sure if you wanted the reception dress to make a big statement, but if so, that dress doesn't do that. I think your dress is gorgeous and I would wear it all night long!

Azazie's dresses ready to go section has a constant turnover of retired samples and discontinued models, sometimes in one or two sizes, sometimes across all sizes.

Look for dresses with a vertical, up and down structure, and a skinny strap. In the blow up, see the princess seam, that runs from the neckline through middle bra cup doen through curve of waist, on both sides? and no triangular shelf under the breasts, side to side? That can be easily be split, and since it has no boning to keep it up, you keep the narrow strap. You can make a deep v fissure. You can make a small ladder ot sparkling crystal or rhinestones every 1.5-2 inches hitching one side to the other avross the opening space, emphasizing how bare it is below. and very easily done by any seamstress, sew a like of bicone or diamond shaped celestial crystal or other brand glass beads or rhinestones along the straps over the shoulders, down the v neck and up the other side. or pearl beens for a sheen not a sparkle. That whole alteration is easy peasy, with that splittable dress structure. And any dress under 300 is easier to take than a pricier dress, knowing you intend to alter it.

Thanks! I was actually supposed to go back today to purchase the second dress. But then I also kept thinking, I want to just love the dress and not have to buy another one. I will definitely reach out to a seamstress.

This structure, with illusion lace at the original V, could have the narrow V entended further down, toward the waist seam, with illusion lace down the split, or narrow decorative strings side to side. having lace shoulders and sleeves actually dramatizes the split, as well as taking the stress of all your dancing movement. Crystals and pearls are more subtle than rhinestones. But you can have a thin elastic cord with 2-3 rows tiny crystal holding one side to the other e ery couple inches, instead of illusion netting.

https://www.firemountaingems.com/ is a site where you can look at crystal bicones or pearl beads, this 8mm size or smaller giving light sparkle not looking trashy on lace.

The bottom is a blow up so you can see the 7 faceted crystal beads. Add a little glitz .

Hi Molly! You can also search for bridal separates and take a look at some of the tops! Places like BHLDN have really pretty lace toppers that can give your dress a totally different look for the ceremony if you went with dress #2!

Thanks Lynnie. I've already purchased dress 1 so I'm trying to figure out all my options before buying dress 2, if I can't work it out with the current dress. I really think it can be done though.

I just tripped over this looking for something else.
But it is a popular dress that has had the dress split right down the center motif to the waist. With illusion behind it. This is a thick , opaque illusion net, but one could use more sheer and see through. or have the split be a little wider.

What a beautiful dress! I wouldn't mind the split being just that size. That is actually perfect I think! Thanks for sharing this one.
