Romantic Disney songs during reception

Melanie, on June 1, 2016 at 8:51 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 28

Hi,

I'm a cartoonist (current client is military) and I love the love songs in Disney movies. It's a total no brainer that I want to include them, even a redone version that sounds a bit more grown up, for our reception playlist. Everybody knows that animation and cartooning is a part of me that won't go away.

However, FH is adamant about not including even 1 romantic Disney song in our reception. I can see where he's coming from, but there's covers done by Celine Dion, Elton John, Michael Buble, etc, that could be included and sound more 'adult.'

This may be a stupid post but how would you handle this and compromise?

I am personally going to find a way to include the theme song from UP. It's my all time fav soundtrack haha.

    Oh and instrumentals only too.

Have you played the versions you are of thinking about? Maybe if he heard them, it would change his perspective. Also, instrumentals could be a nice comprise.

Yeah I wouldn't include more than 3. I think he's being too finicky.

Both of my college degrees are in cartooning- give me a break! LOL

If he won't budge on the Disney songs why not consider other ways you could incorporate your cartoons? I'm not sure if you have a theme but you could make pictures to identify each table rather than table numbers or do a cartoon picture that your guests can sign around the edges which you could frame afterwards.

You could use sayings in place of table numbers if he won't budge on songs. For example tale as old as time...

Can you feel the love tonight by Elton John from the lion king doesn't even sound like a disney song. Could you find the covers and play them for him? He probably won't even know they are from disney movies.

My wedding is loosely Beauty and he Beast themed. It's reflected in my off the shoulder sleeve/strap on my dress, I'm walking down the aisle to an instrumental version of the theme song (our DJ is also a violinist), and we'll be playing instrumentals of some songs like Be Our Guest just while people are eating dinner. We also are incorporating it into our decor. There are definitely ways to incorporate Disney without being childish. Here is a mockup we did of our tables.

I'm a HUGE Disney fan too! My favorite is "So this is love" from Cinderella and they are dancing at the ball.

It doesn't really sound too much like a Disney song, IMO.

    Good luck!

I think when you say Disney theme songs he maybe just thinking of the playful Disney songs instead of the more romantic stuff. I would say find the adult covers and play him a few of exact ones you want and play instrumentals for him.

Our first dance we finally settled on in Micheal Buble's You've Got a Friend in Me, which was made more adult.

I think the adult cover versions is a perfect compromise. Either play them for him or just have like 3 snuck in there. I bet most people who turn their nose up at Disney/animation couldn't recognize the songs anyway.

Do instrumental versions of your favorite songs. I bet you he won't even notice, and may even start humming along. =)

During what parts of the reception are you planning to play the songs? I feel like the instrumental versions would be awesome during cocktail hour and dinner (where it's a nice background sound). I'm thinking of using the instrumental "Beauty and the Beast" for our VIPS (my mom and FH's parents) to walk down the aisle just prior to the ceremony.

Figure out how many you want, then cut it in half to meet him halfway
