Ring Rant/Vent

Kathryn, on April 17, 2016 at 6:54 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 36

To keep the warranty on my ring I have to take it in every 6 months to get it cleaned/inspected. Took it in yesterday, everything was fine, the woman cleaned it and then helped us look for a band for FH. She was pushy and seemed inexperienced. She also made a comment about my ring saying that I'll definitely want to "upgrade" in a few years when we have more money to spend...ugh. After a while someone else came over to help us and we picked out FH's ring.

Fast forward to this morning- I woke up & noticed that one of the side stones is missing from my ring! I just took it in yesterday to get it looked at and the girl said it was "great!" so I'm wondering how she missed it?! Now I have to wait 2 weeks for it to get sent out and fixed. UGH so annoyed, more with the girl than the fact my ring is gone. I had it for 6 months in great shape, she runs it through the cleaner, and now the stone is gone! I'm so frustrated (probably unwarranted). Anyone else have bad jeweler experiences??

I don't blame you for not wanting to buy from a pushy salesperson. And I don't know how she missed it, but at least you shouldn't have trouble getting them to cover the damage since you just got it inspected. Maybe they will get it back to you sooner than expected.

My FH got my ring in San Antonio at Zales, who's standard size is 7 (I'm a 5). They told him they could resize it in a day. I went to the Zales in Reno, NV (we are currently living in 2 different states) to get it sized and they told me they would have to send it out to get resized. She didn't give me much information about where it would be going or how long so I kept asking all these questions. Finally she told me it would take 4 weeks and they'd be shipping my ring to California! I told her I didn't really want to wait that long since I had just gotten my ring and my parents were having a celebratory dinner with some friends for me that weekend. She kind of shrugged me off like there was nothing I could do. I asked if I could pay more to have it done sooner since the resizing itself was free since my FH bought insurance that included free resizing and she said no. I asked if there was anything I could do to get my ring sized sooner and she said no. I told her I wanted my ring for the party so I would bring it back after the weekend to get it resized. After taking to some friends, I found out I could take it elsewhere to get it sized, which I had no idea because I've never owned nice jewelry. So $30 and one day later at a different jeweler my ring was sized and beautiful. I guess it's not Zales being a bad jeweler, but I don't know why they wouldn't suggest going somewhere else since they weren't losing money from it. I just thought it was weird. Maybe they aren't allowed to suggest other places but I was clearly uncomfortable with shipping my ring off for 4 weeks.

I haven't had that bad of an experience. When my FH gave me the ring, he had already bought it about 3 months in advance. One of the side stones was cracked (SOMEHOW, it's a freaking diamond! But anyways...). So I noticed and showed it the jeweler when we went to get it sized. I was worried they were going to be difficult because he had purchased it a while before but thankfully they replaced it at no extra charge at the same time they sized my ring. It did take an extra week beyond the normal time to get it back, but I'm glad it's over and I was so happy when it came back! Smiley smile

It could have been missing already and she did a crappy job of inspecting it. At least you went and got it done so you don't have to pay for that stone! I have a few friends that didn't know they had to do that to keep the warranty, or forgot and it's no longer valid.

Omg I'm on the SAME BOAT! Our family jeweler retired and the guy that took over is terrible!! He sized my ring (the designer doesn't like to do that as it loosens the prongs) and I've had to take it in FOUR TIMES in the past 6 months... It's currently at the shop AGAIN

Rachel- that may void your warranty. I would look into that. If another jeweler does work on it, that may be an issue

I had a stone fall out of mine. FH got it from Helzberg. I drive a little farther to one that has a jeweler on site so they were able to fix it in about an hour is Instead of having it sent out.

I got mine at Kays and if I go to another jeweler, it would be a against my warranty as well. So definitely look into that!

Luckily I haven't had a pushy consultant. I'm sorry you're fruatrated. Smiley sad

Yes! Fh purposed with a gumball ring and let me pick out whatever I wanted. So we did it had to be resized no big deal figured it would. Well long story short...after waiting the 2 weeks for my ring to come back, they lost it kept telling me it was on its way and would be here on this day...that day came still no ring...finally my ring shows up an extra 2 weeks later and a week after having it my center diamond changes colors and gets all nasty looking...went in to find out what the problem was...that's when I was told my center diamond wasn't real it must've not gotten replaced needless to say I returned my ring for a refund and am now on the hunt for another ring I love.

^^that happened to my friend! Except come to find out someone on the inside was stealing the rings. So my friends FH said he better be getting a ring but bigger and better. And of her choice. She did. It's amazing and was about a couple hundred more than her original ring. I would definitely be doing something about that more than a refund!

My ring is from Zales. The Lifetime Diamond Warranty states no one else can do any work on it.

I don't want to deal with that company ever again and I made that perfectly clear so I'm okay finding a different ring and a real one (like it should've been and what Fh paid for) from a different jewelry store. After them losing my ring, my dates not being right and my center stone being fake I'll take my business elsewhere.

Rachel, I'm sorry you had a bad experience with Zales. Our bands are from there & I did have mine sized with them. The reason they take so long is because they don't have onsite repair services & have to have things sent out. My store was happy to suggest someone local for me for a different ring. (I need prongs built up on one I've had for 23 yrs.) I'm stuck with them doing all repairs (if I need them) on my band, otherwise, my warranty is voided.

Whoops! 4 weeks was still too long for me to be without my ring.. I did get it sized a half size smaller to make sure it wouldn't fall off my finger.. guess that'll be my new insurance policy hahah

This makes me so glad that the local Jared has someone on site that can resize rings! I'll be taking my wedding band in one night this week to get it resized before the wedding next weekend.

That is ridiculious of her to say something like that.... I never had problems but fh did. He hates going into jewelry stores because they are so pushy.... hence why he bought my engagement ring from their websites

I was NOT good about getting my ring checked every six months, and one day noticed one of the little stones was missing-- crap! So, I took it back to Shane Jewelers, they said, "OK, if we have a tiny sapphire in stock, it'll be done in a week. If we have to order one, it'll be a month". Well, six weeks later, I still didn't have my ring back!

Good news-- they comped me the repair/stone because of the delay. Bad news-- it was about 2 months before I got it back!

Is your ring from Kay's, by chance?

I understand your frustration! I just want to point out that can very easily happen. The ring is inspected under a microscope to check the stones and prongs. It's then put into an ultrasonic cleaner, which vibrates to loosen debris. After it's taken out, it is steamed to blow out excess dirt. It's very possible the melee diamond came out at that point and she didn't see it. Melees are held in by very tiny prongs and often, become loose and fall out. It likely won't be the last time it happens. Smiley sad But I'm glad you have a warranty to cover it!

    Edited for typo

@Annakay it is!! I heard mixed reviews, but FH and I went to look together for rings and we had the best experience with our Kay store (different salesperson) and so we went for it. Now I'm nervous!!
