Ring Insurance...help a girl out!

WeAreOne0822, on January 11, 2015 at 1:55 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

My fiancé didn't get this for my ring. I'm nervous one day the inevitable may happen. Is it too late to get ring insurance? Do you have it? Is this a difficult process or thing to get? What do you all recommend from experience? Thanks!!

You can get a jewelry rider if you have homeowners or apt. insurance. It's not hard and it doesn't cost a fortune.

Celia is right! My FH did his through his insurance! It's worth it. He said it wasn't difficult! I definitely needed it.. It's a solid security blanket and doesn't cost a lot.

It's not hard at all and doesn't cost a lot. You're not too late. Call your insurance company if you have home or renters insurance and you can add a rider. If not, you can go through a company such as Jewelers Mutual. Most insurance companies will require you to get an appraisal first, especially if it is an expensive ring (5k+).

I work for State Farm and it varies by state on cost and type of ring. The good thing is you can add as a jewelry rider or if you have State Farm, get a separate personal articles policy that has a 0 deductible, mine was cheap $50 per yr and I'll add the bands on as well. It's definitely not too late but if stick with your current auto/ home insurance carriers vs the jewelry specific companies personally

We have my engagement ring through the jeweler, but we had my promise ring through homeowners. I knocked the pearl out of it twice and they replaced it both times no problem. My mom also has a pair of diamond earrings on her policy and she lost one recently. Because it was an older pair that wasn't made anymore, the insurance had her just turn in the remaining earring and gave her full value of the earrings so she can just go get a new set.

I got mine through my insurance at State Farm. If anything happens - they will pony up with no deductible. If it gets stolen, they will cut me a check with a police report. No hoops to jump though. It only costs me $61 a year I believe. For me that is well worth it since my ring cannot be replaced (it is a one of a kind antique).

@o&s- it's pretty decently priced and easier to manage! I know other companies call it different but a rider limits the coverage whereas a separate policy like o&s and I have will broaden coverage and offer more options!

I didn't want to know what my ring cost as it didn't matter to me as long as I loved it which I do! However my FH had to turn the documents over to me so I could insure it lol poor guy was not too happy!

I got engaged on a Saturday and had my ring insured on that Monday!! haha. You can get insurance at any time though! Do you have homeowners/rental insurance? Most likely it covers jewelry under $1,000 (read your policy just to be sure) but for most people, engagement rings are over that. You will need a separate policy...our insurance is through State Farm so I just went with them, I got a personal article policy. Go see your insurance agent ASAP and take your appraisal with you (your fiance should have gotten one when he purchased the ring). The cost depends on how much your ring is worth but my policy is about $40/year. I will also add our wedding bands once we get married.

When my fiancé added my ring to our renters' policy, they told him he could put it on his policy and then I'd have to add it to my policy (until they realized we live together and are on the same policy). So if you're not living together or not on the same homeowners/renters policy just make sure you talk to your insurance company about what you need to do. Right after he proposed we had a nice romantic conversation about insurance Smiley smile

Our homeowners insurance covers jewelry already up to a certain amount. I would think my engagement ring would be covered since it's within the limit they specify you can claim.

Because my rings are an heirloom and very expensive, I went with Jewelers Mutual. My mother goes through them, as well as a few of my friends. They've all had nothing but nice things to say about them. Out of curiosity, State Farm wanted to charge us $270 a year with no deductible. The set was appraised and certified at $18,000. Is that normal? We're paying less at Jewelers Mutual and $50 deductible. We have renters and 2 brand new vehicles insured with them so I'm pretty confused how everyone else is paying like $60 a year.

Alexis- I think you're in az right? I am too and u could look into it for you. It cones down to the price, location etc you'll probably pay more liability in downtown phoenix vs sun city statistically. Also if the girls like me so far only have our e rings vs other jewelry, that comes into play

@monica you're correct but if it's on the homeowners it's subject to your deductible. If you have a 3000 ring with a 1000 deductible, you'll only get technically 2000 coverage vs a separate policy with a 0 deductible

The only insurance I have right now is car insurance... is there a way to add it to that? I know this seems like a very dumb question but I've never even known that you could insure your ring until I got engaged and had the conversation with my FH

@Samantha- I don't think you can add it to car insurance, but if you're renting an apartment/house, whatever, you can get a renter's policy to cover your belongings and add a rider to that (I think our policy with the extra jewelry rider is under 200 dollars/year). If you own your house, I think most mortgage companies require homeowner's insurance.

Even without insuring the ring, I think having renter's insurance is a great idea. Our landlord doesn't require it, but did explain to us when we moved in that his insurance covers the structure and walls, but our renter's policy would cover our things in the event of a fire, break-in, etc. Our last apartment complex required it, and I think it's just a good idea.

If you're living with family, you can talk to them about adding a rider to their policy (this was the conversation my fiance had with the insurance company).

I have a personal articles policy as well to cover all of my jewelry. In my state, that's definitely better than adding to homeowners. There was something like a $2500 deductible and coverage only up to 5k with homeowners. The personal articles policy covers much more and costs me $160 a year for all the jewelry on it.

I just scanned and emailed the appraisal, which the jeweler automatically included when we bought the ring, to my insurance agent to add to my household insurance. Done. Costs $180/year to insure it.

I'd like to second Christine's point about renters insurance. I know there are a lot of people who don't know about it, and it's really important to have.
