Ribbon for wedding cake

Missy, on March 26, 2012 at 11:35 AM Posted in Planning 0 7

My venue includes a cake, which we decorate (or our florist) I'm planning on buying flowers at a local shop to put on the cake b/c I'm not using many flowers at my wedding. My inspiration photo I attached shows ribbon, which I like, but my wedding planner said that sometimes the icing (they use a buttercream icing) will seep through the ribbon. So I was wonder if there is a specific kind of ribbon that would work better for this or if anybody has any experience with this. The second picture is the set-up the venue does with the cake

I would be careful with using flowers from a local shop to place on your wedding cake. Make sure to let them know this will be for your cake, I've heard people having reactions from certain pesticides on flowers, yikes.

I LOVE the first one! Colors are gorgeous! The second one is a bit dark and hard to see..

I have also heard of the icing seeping through the ribbon or the ribbon dye coming off onto the icing. Perhaps a cake baker can tell you what kind of ribbon to get.

And, yes, make sure the florist knows the flowers will be around food.

I had ribbon on my cake it was the color purple and it didn't seep through which I did have buttercream also. It was just plain old ribbon from the craft store.

I would try those plastic-y ribbon you can get.

And I second being careful about flowers. Not only the pesticides, but some flowers are toxic. Definitely talk to someone who knows what will be safe or not- or buy sugar flowers.

You can purchase edible ribbon strips from a bakery supply store.
