Rhodium plating

Shelly, on August 22, 2012 at 1:58 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

Ladies - how often should rhodium plating be done on a white gold ER? I've been wearing mine since new years and there is definately a difference between my ER and WB

Maybe depends on your body chemistry and how often you wear it and what it's exposed to? (Chemicals, detergents, etc.) I've only had my e-ring replated once over 18 months, around the time we purchased my wedding band. Our jeweler said some people get it done once/year, others get it done every 6 months.

I have mine done whenever I think it looks dull. I actually just dropped off my WB to be replated because the chemicals of the hot tub on our honeymoon turned it yellowish. I would see what your warrenty covers at your jeweler. Maybe have both the ER & WB done at the same time so they both look new at the same time.

I also had my ER replated right before the wedding so they both looked perfect and new. I didn't wear it until the wedding day so they both looked unworn for the pictures.

I hadn't owned mine long before it started yellowing (maybe 2 months).

Thanks! I'm so careful with my ER I always take it off for washing my hands, showering, cleaning, etc and yet the gold is wearing. I've worn a promise ring for 9 years, never took it off for anything and it's still shiny...perhaps because the band is narrow and rounded compared to my thicker, flatter ER band.

I first got my e-ring replated after about 6 months. I'm coming up on 6 months again and am considering taking it back to my jewelry for another plating. For the most part it's fine, however the prongs on my center diamond start to yellow before anything else. The color difference between my prongs and diamond drives me crazy.

My warranty actually requires it to be done every 6 months, i take it in for an inspection and to get nice and shiny again Smiley smile

I have had my ER for almost a year and haven't had it done yet. There isn't a noticeable difference (that I can tell) between my ER and my WB. But I take my ER (and now my WB) to get it inspected every 6 months to keep my warranty up.

I think it's a matter of preference, whenever you think it needs it. I didn't want to fuss with it, because I knew I would never take it in!

My warranty allows for it to be re-done once a year without it costing me anything. So that's how often I'll probably do it.

I think it was probably 8 or 9 month before I started noticing that my E-ring was looking different than my unworn wedding band. But it wasn't too terrible... I tried pointing it out to my mom and she said she couldn't see the color difference. I could only really tell if I was holding the two rings together. Now that I'm wearing them both at least they'll fade at the same speed!

Future Mrs Williams, it depends on your jeweler. My jeweler does all of his own work right on the premises. He re-plated my ring right after cleaning it and it only took a minute.

It is a very simple process, however some places still keep your ring or send it away to have it done, etc. I know my FSIL was getting hers re-plated and her jeweler had her ring for like 2 weeks. I thought that was really excessive, but is just another reason why I love our jeweler so much.

Future Mrs. Williams - My ring is from one of the standard mall jewelry shops, Weisfield, and I think most shops like that send out their rings for re-plating. They quoted me 2-weeks, but I got notified that it was ready in about a week and a half. If you want to have it done before the wedding, you should probably take it in within the next couple of weeks. You can always call and ask them how long the process will take, also!

I am an every 6 months girl too. My warranty covers it too. I notice that at about 6 months my finger gets itchy, just the chemical reaction to the ring and my body. I am having my rings soddered so they will both be plated and like new for the wedding!

We purchased my rings through Shane Co. so mine is all covered under their warranty. I can take mine in whenever I think it is necessary and they will cover it at n/c. I have had my ER for over 2 years now and it has been done 3 times now. But I just recently had the wedding bands tacked on and have been playing with the sizing to be sure we have the right size, as once the wedding comes I won't be able to get it re-sized, as there isn't a Shane Co. out east. So the end of September I will be taking the entire set back in and having the entire set re-done again to make it all look brand new.

I feel so stupid right now, but I am soooo happy you posted this! I didn't know you were supposed to get it replated! I have been wondering why my ring looks so yellow. LoL I have been wearing it for 4 years now. Thanks!

I also think it depends on the particular alloy your jeweler uses. H has a WG band, and it's a little scratched up after 10 months, but color is the same as it was 10 months ago.

I haven't had mine replated yet, and I've had it for a little over 3 yrs. only the bottom part of the ring has discolored, it's not really noticeable unless I put on my wedding band next to it. I called blue Nile to see how much it would cost to resize the ring (has to go from a 5.5 to a 5 first time was from a 6 to 5.5), clean and replate and it's free! I said this is the e-ring that was purchased 3 years ago not the wedding band last week, the customer service rep said yes that's the one, lol I was shocked. Woohoo for Free stuff!
