Return addresses on Invitations? (and a bit of a vent)

The New Mrs Seedes, on June 4, 2011 at 3:01 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

FH and I just went to the post office all excited to mail out our invitations. We get waited on my this grumpy worker. First she looks at my invitations with a dirty look and says "well, you'll have to rewrite these with a better pen because the ink is too light." I nicely replied that I would like them hand sorted as they are wedding invites. She just gives me a dirty look. She then tells me to go home and write return addresses on the back bc as of right now "they won't get sent back to you if you screwed up the address" I left a bit upset...I was really excited to send them out with the FH. Silly I know.

So, did anyone else write their return addresses on their invitations? I truly can't remember ever receiving a wedding invitation with a return address on the envelope.

I'm definitely putting a return address on it..I got matching labels from vistaprint. I want people to know right away it's my invitation..plus I did get an STD sent back to me with an invalid address, I guess the distant cousin had moved or something? Without the return address I would not have known that.

I have seen them on the back on the flap. That is where I put mine.

I just got the clear return labels from staples and printed them with script font.

We've only sent our save the dates, but yes- the return address was embossed on the envelopes. Really all mail should have a return address (which they could have been kinder about) - but I can't imagine sending out the most important invite of my life without a return address.

Thanks girls. After I calmed down I realized I should put a return address label or write my return address. I think she just caught me by surprise. I was so excited to mail them.

You don't have to, but at almost 3.00 per invite for postage, I will have a return address on my invitations. I would like them returned if for some strange reason my guest moved.

I put mine on the back (though when I took them to the Post Office the woman said they should go on the front. I pointed out that they were wedding invites and she seemed to think that was ok). I am glad I did because I got at least one returned invite.

You should always put a return address on invitations (or any piece of mail, for that matter). The grumpy postal worker is right. If you have a "bad" address for someone, or for some reason it is not delivered to the recipient, you would know, as it would come back to you.

Also, many people will use the return address as a place to send a gif, especially if your RSVP's are going to another address.

The printer, for my daughters invitations, printed the return address on the back flap.

Yes my invitation lady suggested that we engrave the return address on the back of the wedding invites and it worked out fine.Your mail clerk was having a bad day, you keep smiling.

Wow, your "civil servant" wasn't very civil. Is it too much to expect politeness from someone who pays her salary.

When ever I send a card or a snail mail letter, I always put a return addie on the back flap. When I send bills, I do it on the front.

For the wedding invites, I used "Lucinda Calligraphy" font on clear labels from Staples, and they will go on the back flap.

I put my return labels on the front and sealed the envelope with a "you're invited" label.

I had personalized stamps with our photo and asked for them to be hand stamped...got the stink eye as well hahah. They told me they don't do that in my town and they have to send them to the city..sooo...hopefully my invites get where they're going Smiley smile

Maybe post office workers just hate special orders in general.

Yes, by postal requirement you must have a return address, no matter where you live. It can be on the back or in the front left corner. I am sorry the P.O. worker was rude about it though, it doesn't take long to fix with some labels. In fact, if she knew anything about customer service, she could have offered to help you find the right labels and at least sold you those before you left.

We had ours printed on the back envelope when we ordered the invitations. Its not unheard of to have return addresses, it makes sense. We had 3 invites returned to us because apparently we had their street address and not PO box. If our return address wasn't on the envelope we would've never gotten them back, would've had no idea the invites weren't sent, and those people wouldn't have gotten an invitation at all. You could always print up labels (just go buy Avery labels for like $10) and print them up on their website and stick them on the back.

My return address was printed on the back flap of the invite envelope. I didn't do them on the response cards since they are coming to me and are pre-stamped
