Replating e-ring before wedding?

Kelly, on July 13, 2014 at 3:25 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

Hi all! So, I've had a bit of a long engagement... he proposed Dec. 22, 2012, and the wedding's on May 23, 2015.

Anyway, my engagement ring is a solitaire set in 14k gold. My wedding band is made of 10k gold. Since I've worn it constantly since getting engaged and because it's a higher gold content than my wedding band, I think it's yellowed a little bit and it probably will yellow more over the course of the next 10 months until the wedding. I asked a jeweler who quoted about $65 for the replating.

FH thinks I'm seeing things and doesn't think it looks yellow at all, and doesn't think it's worth it to have it replated. What do you think? It's easier to see the yellowing in the side view (e-ring on right, wedding band on left).

Edit: The reason I'm asking is because I know my rings will be photographed a lot during the wedding, so I want them to look nice the day-of!

    Hey date twin! Smiley smile

Personally I don't see it. But for only $65 I say why not. It will make you calmer on the day and you wont be worrying about it showing up in pictures. Smiley smile

I would do it so it looks its best on your wedding day. It's not much money and white gold generally needs to be re-dipped once or twice a year anyway to avoid looking yellowish. It sounds like you're due.

My e ring is white gold, and when my matching band came in, I noticed a difference... after a bit of research, I found out that they should be cleaned and dipped every year. If it's going to bother you, I'd have it done.

Mine is getting done before the wedding. Eventually, there will be a difference. I'm surprised your getting charged though. Re-plating was included for both my rings.

I get mine (18k gold) done every 6 months. FH bought the plan through the jewler that lets me do it as man times as I want at no charge. It was $600, but I've already had it repaired and replated 3 times so it has basically already paid for itself

I'd recommend it! We got engaged December 27, 2012 and I sent my engagement ring off to be re-plated at the beginning of this month (and I haven't worn it since it got back). You definitely want it to look shiny and new!

Mine wasn't even yellowing but I wanted it to be shiny and new looking in the photos with my band. I sent mind off last weekend to be replated, although it was covered by the protection plan on my ring.

I'd say get it done! This is your day to look your finest and if this will bother you on your special day...just do it. Like others have said...if this tiny detail is going to be bothersome to you on your wedding day...you might as well get it done to elevate that worry. In the long run, $65 is not an overboard price and it will make it look as you want it to look on your wedding day.

Yep- get it done. White gold is notorious for this and it will mismatch your band in photos!

I'm having my rhodium dipped before the wedding as well. I'll probably send it out 3-4 weeks before the wedding so I can make sure I get it back in time :-)
