Renting chairs or chair covers? Help!

FutureMrs.Dyson, on August 17, 2016 at 11:09 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 38

Hey y'all! So I'm debating between renting chiavari chairs or chair covers and sashes. I HATE HATE hate those darn chair covers. BUT the cost to rent chairs is $910 plus tax and the cost for chair covers and sashes is $455. As y'all know, my fiance lost his job so we could really use the savings towards other things we thought we would have to go without. The next problem is we planned on having navy blue table cloths. Would navy blue table cloths and white chair covers with navy sash look OK? The table with have plenty elements of navy gold and white to balance it. Opinion please?

In my opinion, nine times out of ten, any chair is better than the pillow case with a bowed belt covered chair. Just do the regular chairs. Don't waste money you don't have (especially when the remedy is worse than the problem). I remember a lot about weddings, but what I never remember are the chairs -- unless they look like little kids wearing ghosts costumes on Halloween.

    Really, you're overthinking it.

I think it would look fine! I'm not a fan of chair covers either, but it will save you a lot of money so I say go for it.

We just had to switch from colored napkins to the white napkins that are included with the venue. Our tablecloths are ivory, so I worry it will clash. But it will save us $450. And it's a freaking napkin. I doubt anyone but me will care lol.

I also think I'm the only person that would care because where I'm from everybody uses chair covers for weddings

I'm renting the shittiest chairs for my ceremony, black folded plastic chairs.

As for my reception, I get the restaurant chairs so they are nice and comfy.

If I were you, go for the cheapest chairs you can get that are white or black.

You are better off keeping those chair and just add some ribbon or some shit to tie onto. DONE.

If doing the chair covers will save you upwards of $400, then I'd say to take a deep breath, get over your dislike, and go for them. Your guests won't know the difference either way, but your wallet will.

That being said, I think the white covers with navy sashes will look awesome! It will tie into your color scheme and won't be too much of any one color. Plus, you can do some fun things to tie them!

    Edit: spelling

We had the same dilemma. My DH refused to pay to rent chiavari, for the amount we needed it would have cost $1200, plus tax and delivery. His family pushed hard for chair covers, but like you I hate chair covers. They look ok until people sit in them then it looks a mess. They pushed up until the day of the wedding. Luckily the last vendor they tried to get me to rent them from got an attitude with me bc I asked for a contract (I'm a lawyer, I'm not giving you a dime without a contract, even if it was a small amount). We had those same ugly black chairs. It def took down the formality a notch but I didn't care, there was a lot that took down the formality IMO (table cloths didn't come all the way to the floor, a few people wore jeans, lots of uninvited guests, guests stealing my MOHs umbrella, a guest tried to steal a bouquet TWICE, plastic flatwear instead of real, etc.). So in the grand scheme it didn't matter for me. I think this is something you could probably rent the month before so give it some time.

Go with the chair covers honey. The savings is tremendous. It should look fine with navy table cloths. Or change to white table cloths & navy table liner.

If I would do anything at all with those chairs, maybe just a sash. Unless each chair cover is wrinkle free, they look tackier than just a plain chair. IMHO

I would just opt for the chair covers/sashes. I am big fan of the chiavari chairs, but the expense is just not worth it to me.

I am in the exact same boat with the same colors. The only difference is we are doing white table clothes that are provided, and using navy table cloth runners instead. I would definitely do chair covers. We saved about 3 dollars per chair going with covers/sashes over renting chairs. Saving a little extra cash is worth it!!

And the company I am renting from says that having navy table clothes and white chair covers look great together! Smiley smile

I'd live with the black chairs. All the covers do is add a mess of wrinkly fabric to the an already tight space. Your tables will be the focal point, not the chairs. I swear to you, I notice everything at a wedding, and I cannot tell you what the last wedding we did (two weeks ago) had for butt containment around the tables. I could tell you if they had chair covers because that's a clarion call that the chairs are ugly and needed to be disguised. Don't disguise them -- just work around them. Don't call attention to them, and that's exactly what chair covers do.

Take it from a professional -- you are overthinking this.

ETA: They will talk about how beautiful the bride was, they will talk about how beautiful the ceremony was, they'll talk about how nice or unique your venue was, they'll take about how much they loved your color scheme. they'll take about how pretty your tables looked, they'll talk about your centerpieces, they'll talk about the open bar, they'll talk about the great apps, they'll talk about the wonderful plated meal or the buffet, they'll talk about your kick ass DJ and all the dancing they did, and they may talk about your wedding cake. What won't they talk about? Your chairs. Whether they are upgrades or standard, nobody cares and nobody notices.

If you are going for a more polished look I would say do the chair covers . Have you considered spandex covers ? They are more fitted than those universal bags. The navy blue TC and sash will look great !

I'm in the same boat , but my venue chairs aren't ugly ( chiavari ) just the wrong color. Since chairs aren't included in the ceremony space I'm considering just renting ghost chairs or gold chiavari for both spaces .

I'm with centerpiece on this one. I have never once left a wedding and thought "wow that would have been such a beautiful wedding, but the chairs ruined it".

I am renting those white wooden folding chairs and not using any covers. It's costing me about $450 for 100. They are unoffensive looking already. I never understood the whole appeal of decorating chairs...

Can you just do without both? I hate chair covers so I would say the regular chairs would look better than those.

I'm part of the minority on WW that actually likes chair covers. But if it about saving money I would skip them all together, that black chair you posted will be fine alone.

Also your idea of white cover with navy sashes and table clothes will like very nice.
