Rent vs Buy

Since I'm 6 months out now, I figure it's time to start looking for FH's attire. He doesn't want to ask his GM to buy a new suit (understandable), but all of the rentals I've seen on Men's Warehouse, Jos.A Bank, etc. don't really fit the look I'm hoping for. I want the guys in navy suits, nothing...

I want the guys in navy suits, nothing too fancy. Did/Does anyone else have the guys in navy? Did you rent or have them buy?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

We did grey suits but there were navy blue ones on sale when we were looking too. We got ours from Jos A. Bank. We ended up buying. It was on a buy three get one free sale, so FH bought all of them and the groomsmen/ushers are paying them back. It was a clearance suit originally, too, so it was a sale on a sale. We got shirts, and suits for $120 each. We bought ties separate cause we wanted fancy screen printed ones. Shoes we decided didn't matter, and only FH is wearing a vest.

If you are thinking about buying I would go for it. Honestly buying is going to cost about the same as most rentals but when you buy you get to keep it in the end. I would just run it by your bridal party maybe give them the options.

With the Jos A Bank suits though, they do come unhemmed so you would have to pay for alterations if you aren't handy with a needle.

Heres a picture of FH in his suit (pre alterations). Smiley smile

Have you tried menguin.com? It is a great site that rents tuxedos, they have great prices, great reviews and part of the rental fee goes toward a penguin organization.

It is costly, but you never know some guys might be willing to buy one since it's always useful for them to own a nice suit! Would it be possible to give them the option to either buy or rent? If the place has the same suit to either rent or buy?

I always suggest for the groom to buy. There is nothing like the fit of a perfectly tailored suit or tux. You will never get the same fit with a rental. It's just not the same and I don't understand why brides spend $1000+ on a perfectly altered dress, only to have the groom rent an ill-fitting / baggy suit or tux that looks so unfortunate.

The groom can stand out. He doesn't have to match the GM. If you can find a navy rental option, I think the best option is for the groom to buy and the GM to rent. Or perhaps find a cheaper suit for the GM to buy. Something that would cost about the same as a rental.

We were also going for a unique look for my husband. Check local stores instead of large companies. They usually offer a different selection than other places.

I told him he can do whatever he wants when it comes to his and his groomsmen's attire.

So, he said he wants to buy a suit. We're gonna budget around $400-500 for that.

We bought our tan suits through JCPennys. It was kind of a pain for my FH to get all of the suit sizes from 7 guys- but we did, had them all try them all and now we are just getting sizes exchanged. We are only waiting on pants for FH. It came to $200 per guy to own them (that included- jacket, vest, pants, shirt, and tie). FSIL did that for her wedding In Dec. with dark grey suits and so we did the same.

Edited to add- so far no compliments and FH is happy with his selection!

Also remember that you will have the Black Friday sales to look out for too in November if you get to that point.

I feel your frustration. We wanted navy as well, ended up going with dark gray because the options around us just weren't good.

Try going to a privately owned bridal store (instead of a big chain like MW). They often carry suits/tuxes from several companies. They usually offer better customer service and will go above and beyond to help you achieve the look you want. They can also make adjustments when the suits come in if needed. They often have better prices than MW.

Macy's actually has a bridal section with some nice suits too, as another option. Not sure if you have a Friar Tux in your area but they have good selection too!

I found the men's suits on a Macy's one day sale. We only had the groom and best man, which made it much easier. The suits were originally $350 on sale for $89. It was way cheaper than renting. I wanted taupe suits, which was also a challenge. I had a very hard time finding the color. I just ordered them and paid for them. If you have a lot of groomsmen, I recommend getting their sizing. If you come across a great deal, buy them and have them pay for alterations and reimburse you. We bought the extra suit, it was BM's job to have it altered.

FH bought a custom suit from Brooks Brothers for around $600 and his GM went to JC Penny's for their suits. They went to men's warehouse and FH was told they wouldn't have the suits in until the day before the wedding. He quickly passed on that.

Our guys are purchasing. We're deciding between Men's Wearhouse and a local suit store. If we go with the local store (that has a reputation for being a very nice store), the guys will get everything for $300. If we go with Men's Wearhouse it will be a little cheaper and that includes alterations. We worked with an associate that is giving us Father's Day deals even though it's passed. Also, if you go with MW, for every $500 you spend, you get $50 in gift cards. Since we're doing everything on one order to get the deal, that would then be used toward the shirts/ties/etc.

I am not doing navy, but I am doing black. We are doing tux rentals (not suits).

The GM, FOB, FOG, my brother (an usher): are paying $116.71 each. My FH is paying $5 for his (which is just the deposit, which he gets back upon returning the tux). My cousin, a reader, (who is traveling from a different country) is receiving all the discounts we won at a bridal show, so his comes out to $62.99. (My FH said that he'd rather give it to my cousin because he has a higher travel cost than his GM). We are paying for the RB's outfit (so depending on how big he is, we will either rent a mini tux (1/2 the cost of the GM rental cost) or buy him a suit (about $80)).

We went to plenty of bridal shows to get discounts at different tux stores. We ended up choosing a local shop - it was much more affordable (and seemed to have a wider selection) than chain stores. All the men will be calling in their sizes (they can get measured at stores in their hometown for free) to our local shop.

ETA: My FH tux is slightly different from the GM (it's actually more expensive and he was suppose to pay for the difference. The one he would have received for free (besides the deposit) would have been the same one that the GM are renting). However, we built such a rapport with the owners of the local company that they just "credited" us the difference in price. (Maybe because they overheard we were paying for the RB's outfit and giving the other discounts solely to my cousin - I'm not sure, but sure grateful).

Check out indochino.com! My FH bought his suit and had each of his three groomsmen buy theirs too. Less than $500 for a custom made suit, and they all get a free shirt if there's more than three of them.

ETA: here's the link to their "wedding" suits, looks like they have a nice simple navy http://www.indochino.com/collection/weddings
