Regrets of what you spent at your wedding?

on October 30, 2018 at 11:29 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 14

Hi All,

So we were originally thinking of staying at a budget of $5,000 but at this point it seems that realistically as much as I don’t want to admit it that is about $10,000 including the venue (ceremony, reception), food and photographer. Honestly the most expensive is the photographer but is the one thing we want to splurge in as his pictures are amazing compared to other photographers. So we are going back and forth with the preferred venue or a cheaper option which might save us about $2,000. Anyways, when I really price out the total amount it seems extreme as we can do so many better things with that money but of course we also want a nice wedding which in return will produce beautiful pictures. Our guest list is small maybe even less than 40 people but regardless the food and rental of tables and chairs from the preferred venue choice is what marks up the price to $3-4k. We are amazed that vendors charge about $100 a person for food that is not even that amazing. I mean for $100 a plate I can get a real nice meal at a Restaurant. We also live in South Florida where venues might be more expensive. Anyways, do you have any regrets after you had your wedding of, “Maybe we shouldn’t had spent $10k on our wedding and used that money for something better”. Thank You.

We definitely spent a lot on our wedding, including help from each of our parents. While the money of course could have gone to "more important" things than a party, we haven't regretted it at all. I definitely had the same thoughts as you leading up the wedding when I kept asking myself why I'm spending so much money but we did basically keep it in our budget and at that point I was committed so we pushed forward.

Our wedding was 100% worth the money, time, stress.. etc. We had an amazing day and our guests truly had a great time. We accomplished exactly what we wanted - to throw an awesome party where everyone danced the night away. I don't regret the money spent at all. We had our dream wedding and we will remember that amazing day for the rest of our lives.

We are spending a good bit of money on our wedding, and honestly, I don't regret it for a second. Sure, I could spend that money on other things - but our wedding is also a once in a lifetime party. I want to party it up and splurge and have it be a night I won't forget. So yes, I picked the extra ice cream bar when I could have saved $500+ and not had it. I usually am super frugal so this is my 'Treat yo self' day essentially. And I don't feel one bit guilty.

No regret at all with the money spent, however, after the fact I realized how much I could have saved by not doing all the little things that absolutely no one notices!

Not married yet, but i do regret spending so much on my dress. It was 1500 and that's the max i wanted to spend AFTER alterations. After doing some research i'm pretty sure my alterations will be another 500 so after all is said and done, i will have spent 2000 dollars on a gosh darn dress. I will never have children so i cant even pass it down lol. I honestly wish i went to DB because I've seen some beautiful inexpensive dresses there since i purchased my gown. I LOVE my dress but $2000 could've gone to the chiavari chair i want so desperately and i know even that is almost a silly expense cause no one other than me and FH will care.

It's hard not to think of all the stuff you could do with the 10 or 20 thousand dollars going towards the wedding, thats totally normal.

But pp's have said its worth it so i choose to believe them!

Thanks Felina. Great to see you can recognize what you wish you could had changed to help others like myself decide. I'm glad to see is normal to worry about the amount of money and how fast it adds up but it all comes down to how important it is to do all this for one day and the memories and pictures and that's what is helping me decide.

I spent a lot of money on our wedding, between H and my money and the contributions my parents gave us. I was so stressed about money leading up to the wedding, and was always questioning my decision to have a larger wedding.
Looking back now, I would pay 3x the amount of our wedding cost to do it all again. It was amazing and totally worth it for us. All the extra items we had were so worth the money, and I’m so glad we went with our top pick photographer, who was only a few hundreds dollars more expensive than our second choice. I wouldn’t have gone into debt for a wedding, but we chose to have a long engagement to save up for our dream day and it definitely was a dream.

I had that same thought about the food! I kept searching and found a little cafe that does catering. It’s going to cost us $22 a person for food that is amazing! I’m so excited to eat it.
Keep looking and check out any mom and pop places in your area.

So great to hear this because this is exactly how I'm feeling! I'm starting to feel that it is worth it and we just extend our engagement!

Great advice and glad you found this for your wedding. The problem is that most venues require you to use their vendors at least where I live.

We spent a lot on our wedding (185 guests; ~$27,000) and it used to give me fits while I was in the middle of planning it. We now have zero regrets. Sure there may have been better ways to spend the money but we have fantastic memories and photos/video and all the people we wanted to attend were able to. It was amazing and totally worth it to us! That being said, we didn't overspend, go into debt, etc. (that would be so not worth it).

I can say leading up to our wedding I have had a lot if feeling and thoughts of "this is so much money for one day." "We could pay of our truck/car/put it towards the house payment." We are paying for 100% of our wedding, and I am very practical when it comes to money. We are fortunate enough to be in a good place financially and it wouldn't set us back. (I would not do it if it was putting us in debt. I would wait a year or two if this where the case)
I think though, its easier to look back and feel silly for spending so much. Than look back and always wish you had a wedding and have regrets of not having one.

We plan on spending quite a bit on our wedding. Most of it's coming from my father, some is coming from my stepfather/mother, and some is coming from us. My dad did give us a choice, he'd pay for the wedding or just give the money to use to put into our home. It was a hard decision, but I've always dreamed of a big beautiful wedding and can't imagine it any other way. Plus we both are working and able to save to put money into our home anyway.

I think we did well for 146 people (under $14,000), but sometimes I do wonder if I should have done a fire hall instead of the state park venue I picked. My wedding venue was a dream, but it's hard not to feel a little guilt over not picking the most affordable option.
