Regret over moving wedding for the first time

Jess, on January 28, 2021 at 4:34 PM Posted in Planning 1 12

We decided to postpone our wedding in September, even though our state was in phase 3 and allowing 250 guests at weddings, we just didn't want to go through with the wedding since there was no vaccine or cure at the time. Fast forward to now, our wedding is supposed to be in May and Covid has gotten much worse. Currently, my state (VA) has a 10 person gathering limit that just got extended to the end of February. I'm just feeling so much regret that we could have had our wedding in September, with restrictions of course.. but now I'm not having much hope we will even be able to have 50 people in May. Our caterer, which was our most expensive vendor is saying if we choose to postpone again, we would need to put down another deposit and we just can't afford to do that. I'm just so over dealing with all of this. Anyone else in VA getting married this spring/summer?

I'm so sorry your dealing with this! I'm getting married in Haymarket, VA in June (first date, didn't postpone). We did cut our guest list from 150 to 65ish, but fortunately since our country club venue serves food, they said they fall under the restaurant category and have a capacity of 100 people right now.

Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but I think that restriction will be lifted to 50 by May. Maryland just announced today that bars can stay open after 10pm starting next week, so I think things in this area are getting better slowly but surely. I read a couple articles earlier this week that said while the situation looks to be improving, the CDC recommends strict restrictions are kept in place until at least March so we don't spiral backwards and I think that's what the governor is doing.

Thanks for sharing some positivity with me. I definitely needed that! I sort of spiraled yesterday when I saw that the 10 person limit is extending to the end of Feb, but I'm trying to remember that a lot can change between now and May - plus our date is late May.

    Hi Jess,
I’m so sorry that you’re feeling this way and that it’s been so stressful for you. I’m in a very similar boat as you. I too live in VA and am getting married in Harrisonburg in May. We postponed from November 2020 and I’ve regretted it as well. I’m hoping for the best in that vaccines will begin rolling out more quickly and that there’s so much time between now and May still. I have a feeling that the restrictions will be relaxed to at least accommodate 50 people. There being a current 10 person limit could truly decrease case count to allow for relaxing limits in the spring. Hoping for the best!

You're right about the current limit and I need to remember that's why it's in place. Hoping the vaccines start rolling out more efficiently here. Can I ask how many guests you're planning for in May? Our original guest list is 150.

I’m located in Fairfax County but we fell in love with a venue near Shenandoah Valley. Originally we had planned for around 50. Most of my family doesn’t live in the country and it would’ve been to expensive to have them come out, but now they definitely can’t come. Now we have a list of around 30.

I would ask the vendor if you can put down a second deposit under the condition both deposits will count towards your service total for them. That way you may be paying more up front but it’d go towards the final cost on the caterer’s invoice

I’m in the exact same boat. We’re scheduled for April 24 and the news was just a massive punch to the gut. I really thought we’d be up to 20 with the new mandate but now I’m feeling crushed. 10 means only immediately family, no spouses. Keeping my fingers tightly crossed that come March, things start to open up again once they start making more progress on the first wave of vaccinations.

I'm in VA, I didnt hear that our restrictions where extended yet again. When did this happen? Now im getting more frustrated.

I'm continuing to plan for our May wedding. But you did give me idea about talking with caterer about seeing what dates that have available for next year and my venue. Hopefully with them being small companies I will be ok. But this has all been stressful.

We are also in VA but had our wedding in NC. We postponed June 2020 to December 2020 and were able to have 100 in December but ended up having 32 including ourselves attend. Keep in mind that even if they lift the number of attendee's limits you will still have people who will not be comfortable attending so plan on a smaller number. We had people cancel up to 2 days prior to wedding day but were lucky our venue only charged us for those who cancelled 72 hours prior. I had not heard of the VA restrictions but I hope it open's up for yall!!

Northam announced the extension on Wednesday. But someone else posted here that the numbers are starting to improve. He's probably just doing this to prevent them from surging again and hopefully we can look forward to lesser restrictions in the spring.

I so looked it up after I said something lol. I'm so over these restrictions. I know its to keep people safe. But, I would hope that people can use common sense and would know what risk they wanna take and not take.
