Reception Song Must-Haves

Kristin, on December 8, 2010 at 11:43 AM Posted in Planning 0 15

What songs do you HAVE to have play at the reception? (aside from special dances)

And what songs do you want banned?

I was teasing FS last night that "Baby Got Back" should be banned Smiley tongue

This is a very personal question as every region/DJ/newlywed couple are different. This is something you should discuss with your DJ/Entertainer. Bring some ideas to the table using the "top" lists from either DJ Intelligence/Mobile Beat, or WeddingWire. They are both a great place to start.

Now, for my own Personal/Professional opinion... please keep your lists to a minimum. If you add 60 songs to your "must have" list... you will be disappointed. Your DJ/Entertainer might only get to play about 30. I would recommend you keep it to 5-10 MUST-HAVE songs at the most. That will give your entertainer enough freedom to rotate the floor and play the music that your guests want to hear.

Keep in mind that music will change significantly between now and July. As your wedding selections begin to take shape, make sure you ask your parents for some input, as well as grand-parents. You will score BIG with them if your play a couple of songs from their era.

    Best wishes!

This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)- by Natalie Cole. It's my sister/MOH and my theme song :-)

I was pretty laid back with my music selections and pretty much only told the DJ a few things. I picked the songs for the procession/recession, sand ceremony, introduction, special dances, cake cutting, bouquet toss and last song. I told him to not play anything with profanity. I told him I really wanted to hear tonight's gonna be a good night by the Black Eyed Peas, and that unless someone requests one, not to play any line dances. Other than that I just told him the type of music I wanted played and let him rip.

We basically told the dj not to play anything with profanity and that he could throw in some christian songs and also some dance songs. I made sure that he through in a polka and song from my parents and FH's era. We didn't go too crazy with anything.

Ah, cute love the polka music!

I was thinking about a reception I was at where the DJ played "Birthday Sex" (I don't even know who it is by...) and a few other songs that just seemed super inappropriate.. oh boy

With the reception, as with the ceremony, aside from one or two specifics, if you let you DJ or band leader know the kind of music you like - and also any kind you don't like, they will probably put together a great mix for you.

Simply put, you don't HAVE to have any particular tracks - it's your day, and there's enough wonderful music out there that will help people have fun. Know, however that people will have come from distance, maybe, spent money on gifts and hotels, and that their musical favorites should always be considered. Plus, your wedding will be the ONLY time all year many of them will come out to dance, and people want to dance to songs they know at weddings.

So, be creative, be individual, and know that your DJ would always rather you give him SOME direction, but that you allow him to also use his experience to keep your wedding jumping!

Songs that I MUST have played are "If It's Love" by Train and "Love Like Woa" by The Ready Set. Those songs make me want to get up and dance around no matter what mood I'm in!

Hmm, no hokey pokey, macaren (or however you spell it) Mambo #5, YMCA (and I wouldn't have the Chicken Dance if I didn't have to but it's one of my FH's aunts favorites so I had to give in to that one lol.) We're having Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls as our first dance, All The Single Ladies by Beyonce for the bouquet toss and right now, that's about all I know. My mom wants some stuff by Shakera, she's going through this whole salsa phase right now (oh joy.) Since she's paying for the DJ, I guess I can let her have a few songs ;-) I stressed out over what song to have for the father/daughter dance and then came up with a solution...I've alloted that responsibility to my father lol. It's his only real job for the wedding.

I'm not sure about my reception yet, but must haves for the prelude at the ceremony will be beachy pop. Think Jack Johnson and other artists like him.
