Reception only wedding - activity/event suggestions?

Fiona, on May 3, 2022 at 12:26 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 12

Hey all,

My now husband and I decided to tie the knot with an intimate ceremony last summer, but we still have a big reception planned this summer to celebrate with all our friends and extended family whom we were unable to host for the small ceremony. I'm realizing I'm having a hard time re-imagining this event, but I kind of want it to be a really fun and easy going party. Questions for you all:

Do we do "first dances" knowing we have been married for a year?

Should we incorporate some other games or activities to fill the void of traditional elements? If so, any recs?

We already have vetoed the cake cutting and parent dances. We were thinking about playing a video of the ceremony during the salad course of dinner. Also curious of people's thoughts about that?

Thanks for any ideas!!

Fiona

I think playing a video of your ceremony is a great idea!! It's such a sweet moment to share! ❤️

I also would definitely do a first dance again! It can just be announced that "now the bride and groom are going to share a special dance together"!

Otherwise good food, booze, and music is all you need for everyone to have fun, dance, and mingle!! 🥂

For what it's worth, I think I would play the ceremony video at a time when folks aren't eating. I would want to focus on the video and salad requires some concentration, lol!

I think that would be good, or maybe even when things are being served.

I would maybe suggest a water themed party around the pool and those who wanted to get in with their dresses could do so! We did this at a wedding last year and it was so much fun

It does seem that a reception/party after the fact could be more whimsical. The receptions on our wedding days can force a greater amount of formality.

If your reception venue has any outdoor space available for you to use maybe set up some fun yard games . I have been to a few wedding with corn hole sets set up during the outdoor cocktail hour. Happy planning!

Thanks for the input, Michael! It is nice to have more freedom and CHOOSE the traditions we want to include or not
