Reception Kisses?

Jacki, on April 9, 2012 at 4:33 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 22

Alright. so. my FH and i have talked about it, and we don't want to kiss every time someone "clinks" his/her glass... My brother and his new wife (they got married on St. Patty's Day) stole my idea without knowing it. Every time someone "clinked", the DJ would call out a couple, and they would have to kiss first. Only when the bride and groom approved, then they would kiss. After 5 or 6 couples, people didn't want to risk it anymore... I know our wedding is a year away, but i know people from the wedding will remember this little "game" and i don't want them to think i'm copying...

I want to do something so we can avoid having to kiss every 5 seconds and actually enjoy the night... Any thoughts?

You could always do a shot instead!

Seriously, I love your idea! Or, you could make the guest do a shot.

Why do you have to kiss every time someone clinked? that is something new I have never heard of it before.

Jasmine, I'd never heard it before either until my dad did it at the restaurant after my husband and I got married. I shushed everyone cause I thought he was going to make a speech!

The clinking = kissing thing has been done at every wedding I've been to. I love the idea of having the DJ call out couples to kiss instead!! Did your brother and SIL give the DJ a list of couples or did he just point?

Haha! Yup, this happens at the weddings I go to. But we don't do it that often. Maybe 2-3 times throughout the entire reception.

But what about making the entire table sing a song before you two have to kiss? Make an individual or the entire table get up on "stage" with a mic to sing in order to have the bride and groom kiss.

We're doing little bells but don't mind the kissing thing. My brother and his wife had people sing a few lines from a song that had the word "love" in it. Only a couple of us could think of anything so they didn't have to kiss much. Right before we sat down for dinner they had the DJ anounce how the kissing/singing game was suppose to go.

@rachelopoly: they gave the DJ a list of couples. They picked at random from that list. We had ours in order of "couples least likely to cooperate" LOL and to top it off, they had to do the same "kind" of kiss that the couple did... we had quite the shock when Grampa grabbed Gramma's butt.....

@Leena: That's a great idea! most of (both of) our families are shy when it comes to that sort of thing.. after 2 tables, i think we'll be off the hook Smiley winking

We were also toying with the idea of just high-fiving instead. Smiley smile

Another alternative when people clink glasses you can have everyone's name on paper, draw one out and that person has to kiss the person next to them.

@Jasmine it's not really a "game" it's more of a tradition thing. The guest clinked forks (or spoons) on their glasses and don't stop until the bride and groom kiss. People just turn it more into a game so that the guests won't do it. I've been to a lot of weddings and haven't been to one where it wasn't done.

    ^ Tiffany's idea!

You know we only had to kiss twice.

I'm not sure how I will handle this yet.

My parents tell me that at their wedding it got so out of control that my mom's dad went over and gave my dad's dad a kiss at one point. There was no more clinking or ringing after that.

@Tiffany: i LOVE that idea Smiley smile that will put a stop to things QUICK! lol!!

@Cyndi: me either! The only wedding i have been to where they didn't do it, was my cousin's. And she provided plastic cups so that people couldn't clink; even if they wanted to.

I was telling mom and FH about this yesterday and neither one had heard of it. FH says there is no way anyone in his family knows to do this, because it's not done in his home country. I've never seen or heard of it, either, and would have assumed someone was going to speak LOL

Just go with the flow... if it happen too often.. have the DJ find out which table click the glass-- then have that table kiss Smiley smile

DH and I had fun with it Smiley smile at first the idea of it just seemed so annoying. but when the day came, and people clinked, i couldnt help but kiss him! i was so happy, and in love with this man, i wanted everyone to know!! in the middle of the reception, we were at the opposite ends of the room from each other and someone started clinking their glass. we slow-mo ran to each other for a dramatic swooping kiss it was awesome lol

I'm going to pretend I can't hear it lol. Or instruct my DJ to crank the music.
