Reception Dinner on a budget

Laura, on July 5, 2019 at 1:25 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7

Hi everyone! I am at home trying to use my morning off to wedding plan and I am having a bit of a freak out and need to vent and also need advice!!

So--my fiance and I are getting married this December, we're having a 7 month engagement. So it's been fast to plan everything, but we already have a bunch of things nailed down. My mom has been hugely involved in the planning process since my parents are contributing most of the money financially.

A lot of our wedding is ending up DIY--friends are DJ-ing, MC-ing, and day-of coordinating. The last big puzzle piece we need is catering, and we only have $4000-$4500 to cover EVERYTHING involved with that--food for around 175-190, staff, tablecloths, and place settings. And then our budget will be basically all used up.

Our venue is very DIY so we could potentially get nice disposable dinnerware at Costco or something to cut that cost, but being in the Chicago-area, I am running into roadblock after roadblock trying to find any caterer that can do a dinner in our budget. We are hoping to do buffet to cut costs, but even that requires staff.

Anyways, I'm freaking out and don't really know what to do, and everyone is giving me opinions on what is and isn't acceptable. Help!!

Have you called local bbq, italian, or Mexican restaurants? Those will usually be cheapest.

Thank you! I have! I'm waiting to hear back from a couple bbq places and see what it would be including staff. I have not tried Italian yet, I will look into that.

I'm hoping bbq in winter wouldn't seem weird to a bunch of Chicagoans haha!

We’re doing a taco bar which will end up being around $900-$1000 for 50 people. We’re not doing servers it’ll just be a buffet. I would look into something like that

Have you thought about hiring some high school or college kids for a few hours as staff? With your large guest list and everything that needs to be covered with your remaining budget it’s probably your best option. I know our catering staffing alone was $2k and that was for a smaller guest list than yours.

Can you budget $10 pp? You can get that from Mexican or BBQ places pretty easily. It won't include serving staff but sometimes includes delivery & set up.

Thank you everyone! We started looking at bbq places and just had really good luck and a really amazing experience with City BBQ yesterday....for buffet (2 meats and 2 sides) for about $13! For us to add on a third side was only $15-16. We are heavily leaning towards this place. The place we went and looked at today was $50-60 a person, which has been about standard for my area for wedding catering packages. It's encouraging to know that there are options--just a little more unconventional I suppose!
