Reception after courthouse?

My fiance' and I have been together for 6 going on 7 years and will be engaged a year in October. We are planning on getting married at the courthouse in October with our immediate family and very close friends. I would really love to have a fun casual BBQ type of reception because we are not fancy people and we are really just wanting to celebrate and have a great time. Is it appropriate to wait and have a reception a few months down the road?

You need to host something immediately after your ceremony for your ceremony guests - that can be just lunch or dinner, depending on the time of day, or snacks and cake and beverages if it's not a meal time. But you can also have a BBQ reception a few months later if you want as well.

I think most people who attend a wedding expect to eat after, nothing fancy.
A few months later you can definitely have your big bbq

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!
It’s totally ok to have a celebration/reception of your marriage in the future. A fun casual BBQ sounds lovely!
As the PPs mentioned, as you’re inviting guests, it may be nice to have some type of refreshment after the wedding ceremony to thank them for coming. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, or somewhere fancy. You could simply have some nibbles in your home, or at a local bar or restaurant near the courthouse. Some small gesture to thank your family and friends for coming out and witnessing the wedding!
