Received a wedding gift from my deceased great grandmother today

Beth, on July 8, 2016 at 9:56 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 39

It was a crystal serving dish on a lazy susan that was passed down to her. She even wrote a card out before she passed away. I hadn't even met DH when she passed, so it was a huge surprise and brought me to tears. I can only imagine that she did this for some of my cousins too, but on that side of the family, there are a LOT of cousins! Has anyone else received gifts passed down from loved ones?

Well kind of... My grandmothers tradition is to embroider a pattern onto 7 dish towels for each of her grandkids. When she got arthritis and knew she wouldn't be able to do it anymore she asked each of the moms of the unwed grandkids what we'd like embroidered. At my shower she presented me with the towels embroidered with puppies and days of the week. I cried because I was sad I wouldn't be getting her "traditional" gift every grandkid has gotten. But she planned ahead and it's something money can't replace!

I still can't get over the note from her. (Please disregard the messy table in the background!)

Beth I seriously cried reading your card. That was beautiful. Although my grandmother isn't with us anymore, my niece is named after her. In the beginning they told my sister that she was having a miscarriage. Luckily, she didn't and continued on with her pregnancy. Two weeks early my sister was told that the baby was in distress and not getting enough nutrients and would have to be delivered by csection that day. She was a healthy, screaming 5lbs 5ounces baby girl who just turned 1 year old last week. Honestly she is my Nana through and through and I know Nana is looking down on Leona and watching out for her and that's my present right there.

Already feeling kind of melancholy tonight, didn't make it even a sentence into the card before crying. What a sweet and thoughtful thing to do!

That is so sweet and special! I was very close to my grandmother but she passed many years ago. At my baby shower, the last gift I opened was a baby blanket my grandma had made (she always made them for every baby born in the family). It was a total surprise. My mom had held on to it for me for many years. I balled my eyes out in front of the whole party haha pregnancy hormones didn't help, but I couldn't get over I had something her hands made that I could wrap my baby in. He was wrapped up in it from the day he was born and still sleeps with it Smiley smile

We got a silverware set from FH's granny who just passed 3 weeks ago. She was already on hospice and we knew she probably wouldn't make it, but we sent a STD anyways. FH's aunt who was taking care of her said she really needed that because she was having a few bad days.
