RANT: ( Sorry in advance) My engagement ring is missing a stone! :(

FutureMrsMerritt, on November 12, 2014 at 10:57 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

Upset..... My engagement ring is missing a small stone and while it is not very noticeable I still know it's missing and it bugs me! A few months ago I cleaned it and put it in a jewelry solution that I have used before and many times on other rings. Well after leaving it a bit in there I noticed it starting to change color so I pulled it out. The stones ever since have been lighter, which I didn't care much about, but fast forward to now, I am missing a stone. I wear my ring all the time, besides the shower so it does go through a bit of hell. I am just so surprised I didn't notice this sooner! The last black diamond at the bottom on the side is the one missing. Luckily all the white sapphires are still in tact. I'm just so upset, rings are to much money to loose a stone!! This was my ring when I ordered it ( the first two) and the last picture is what it looks like now since it has gone through hell. Is it me or is it discolored?

It looks gold in 3rd picture not silver. What is is made of? Mine is white gold, AKA gold with rhodium plating on it. Time to be redipped but waiting until closer to wedding. I use alcohol based hand gels all day long a nurse so I am sure that is not helping the ring. I would be pissed my stone fell out. Where did you get? Any warranty?

I know whitegold turn brassy after while and you need to rhodium plate it again as Susan said. It would need to be a much closer picture in white light to tell if there was much other change though

It's silver, I think the way the light is hitting it makes it look gold, but on my finger it does look silver. However, the black stones look just as light as the ones in the picture. When I first got it, they were all dark as night lol. The band is just sterling silver, but that is the only thing that has not changed color! The white sapphires and black diamonds seem to be the only thing affected. I am a teacher and use a lot of hand sanitizer, perhaps the alcohol from has done it in? I'm contemplating getting mine redipped if I can. My FH got it from Zales, and I don't believe with any warranty.

Maybe this pic is better? I mean my ring looked exactly like the first pic when I got it, if not better.

My FH purchased my ring from Zales as well, and it has a lifetime warranty. I think they offer that with any purchase over a certain amount. His band also has a lifetime warranty. They do free cleanings and inspections, and cover the replacement of any missing stones. His ring had to be resized. But due to the type of metal they couldn't resize it and had to just order a new one and it was totally covered by the warranty. It's worth a shot to check into it.

My understanding of "black diamonds" is that they are low quality white diamonds that have been treated to turn black. So perhaps the cleaning solution you used has caused the black treatment to wear off and lighten the color. I would take it back to Zales and ask them about it.

I would take it back to Zales and speak to the Store Manager. I'm sure, they will help you and let you know how to clean & store your e-ring. They probably can polish away the tarnishing. Silver has a way of getting tarnish; I'm sure that's all it is. The Store Manager may offer to replace your missing stone for free. Be positive and I'm sure everything will work out to your favor. Good luck HUG

Did you buy insurance? They should fix it if you have insurance.

I have a large diamond heart pendant that was made up of those tiny diamonds. They do fall out, so check it frequently. As far as cleaning it -- you said it's silver. Did you mean in color or is that the type of metal? If it's actually silver, get one of the silver jewelry cleaning cloths. They do an amazing job on really brightening the metal. As far as the stones are concerned, just clean them with warm water and a tiny bit of dishwashing liquid using a soft, tiny brush (like a toddler's toothbrush).

If it's not insured, I would get it insured asap. We added my ring as a rider on our homeowners insurance. The cost is around $30/year. So worth it.

Even if you don't have insurance on it or have it covered under your homeowners insurance, sometimes they might still cover something small in terms of a small diamond like that. My mom lost a small carat diamond and gold earring one time and didn't have any insurance on it and our homeowner's insurance still covered it.
