Hey everyone! My fiancé and I have been struggling financially with the last month or two of wedding planning. He’s in the navy and went without a paycheck for a while so we had to budget tightly. Then when the paycheck did come we ended up using almost all of it for the rest of the things we need for the wedding. Now that we are a week away from the wedding, everything else is paid off but what we forgot to budget was the tips... who do you tip? How much do you tip? Do we need to tip them the night of the wedding or can we wait till the next payday. I feel like the officiant, DJ, Planner should be tipped. The other stuff is through the venue which charges us gratuity. Do we need to tip them as well?

I AM WITH YOU. I did not tip my vendors who performed the service I paid them to do. My vendors were amazing, but I feel I had already paid for that.

I’m glad we waited to tip. Like others said it’s based on service. I paid for the serves and if you did good / great you got a tip. My mom wanted to tip the photographer $500 but thank god we waited because our photos sucked!!!

Totally a save for me. all the hindsight is helpful. I feel as though you should only tip if you are happy with the service.

I think you're totally fine and not out of "etiquette" on this. I've been to many weddings where they do the dollar dance for the bride and groom to receive the money made and people LOVE it! It's basically the same thing as what you're doing for the DJ. If they don't want to tip, they don't have to lol but you are not in the wrong for offering an option to.

So, we ran into the same problem. I e-mailed all the vendors to let them know we will not be able to tip because our car actually broke down 2 days before the wedding and we had to get a rental. I had ready wrote thank you cards and purchased gifts for the vendors and families. I gave the Officiant $50 and a coffee mug and a thank you card that I purchased from Amazon, I gave the DJ $50 and a thank you card, our photographer for the reception I got her a coffee mug with a thank you card from Amazon as well. I mailed the Chapel and the Hotel a thank you card for everything they have done.

I think it is completely fine to tip later. You should not have to worry about that on your special day.

About tip jars - under no circumstances will I allow any of my vendors to put tip jars out. Very poor etiquette IMO to expect guests to pay tips at a wedding.

I wholeheartedly agree with you I hate this "you must tip everyone regardless" mentality, also coming from a former server. I refuse to tip someone for doing the basic service that I am already paying for. For example, I will tip the pizza delivery driver, but I will not tip when picking up a pizza (the fact that it is an option now is mind blowing to me).
