Raising Money for Wedding

sjd85, on July 18, 2015 at 11:48 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

I'm sitting at the hair salon and I just overheard a conversation about a couple who is selling raffle tickets for a pair of football game tickets to raise money for their wedding.

This person thought it was a really clever idea too...

Tell them to check out wedding wire first! Lol. Oh boy... Crazy that they think that is acceptable.

This is actually not too crazy for Canadians and others in states in northern New England. I see you're in Troy. . . could be they are transplants. . ..

@barbara - that's only very certain rural areas of a couple of provinces, not all Canadians! Canadian wedding customs vary heavily by province and region

I don't see anything wrong with selling raffles for football tickets. Just like I don't see anything wrong with selling stuff on ebay or craigslist to raise money. As long as the couples isn't asking for donations. I think it's fine.

This kind of stuff just makes me eye roll. I took on a second job to afford the wedding I wanted while still being able to pay all the bills and not have to ask ANYONE for ANYTHING. Seriously, it's not that hard to pick up a few weekend shifts at a retail store, or serve tables three nights a week.

Who cares... Sure it's tacky, but it's better then going bankrupt for a wedding...

Someone said something about when will people have the wedding they can afford. The answer will be when the whole world stops trying to convince people that they have to have xyz to get married.

Even on this site, where lots of people say 'have the wedding you can afford', 9 times out of ten you still see most of the brides here saying 'well you've got to have a DJ - a wedding without a DJ will be a mess'. 'You have to serve alcohol, weddings without drinking are boring' and so on, and so on.

I'm not blaming individuals, but society as a whole that has created this monster of a wedding industry. You've got to have the big ring, and the big white dress, and the party or else you're not really married. Or at least that's the constant message being sent to people.

Do I think this is tacky as hell? Oh yes! But I can also have sympathy for a young couple who just want to have what they see 'everyone' else as having.

I agree and I disagree with Nicola. Can't afford booze or a DJ? Have an afternoon tea wedding. Finger foods and light drinks are significantly less expensive. The problem is that we put these pictures into girls heads at a young age that they have to have xyz or it's NOT a wedding. Selling raffle tickets to a football game and using the money for your wedding isn't really that big of a surprise to me. If they used it for new countertops or to pay their bills, some might think that was genius. My old job used to give away baseball, football, and concert tickets all the time. I never raffled them, but I sold them for what they were worth. I got free Kanye tickets and sold them for $350 a piece. Not a Kanye fan and by the time I got the tickets, his show was sold out. Pretty sure I used that money for rent..... Some probably went into savings for the wedding too.

I literally just saw a "go fund me" type thing on FB last night of a couple trying to raise donations to pay for their wedding. their little blurb was something the lines of how expensive the groomsmen's tuxes were, blah blah blah and oh, let's not forget about the bride!

i was so appalled i think i literally said, "that's so disgusting..." out loud.

I'm with KM on this one. Myself and my FH work our asses off to save for the wedding. I can't imagine a raffle, or anything of the sorts. When we say, "have the wedding you can afford" - that's how I interpret it. If a raffle is necessary to fund your wedding, you need to scale back - or postpone until which time you can afford the wedding. end rant.

Haha come to Manitoba Canada.... everyone getting married has a "social" ... there are tons every Saturday night...10 bucks a ticket, cheap drinks.... tons of raffle prizes and a late lunch .... very community oriented to support the couple getting married type thing. Everyone goes to everyone's socials and supports each other.

I actually don't see anything wrong with this. It's not something I would do, but who cares? At least they are not "begging" for money.

I would feel better about this if they just sold the tickets directly to someone. With the raffle, the people who don't win the tickets are just giving away money to their wedding fund without getting anything in return.
