Raffle - terrible idea? Well, more of a giveaway.

Izzy, on April 15, 2018 at 1:17 PM Posted in Planning 0 32

Yes, it's me again, the crazy girl who's forever away from her wedding and just can't stop thinking about everything. Please just indulge me while I obsess for the next month--it'll cool down when I get the next 'shiny new thing' to think about. Plus I have a book coming out next month, that'll provide plenty of distraction! (Yes, as someone did ask last time, I have a therapist, but I haven't seen her since the official decision to get married happened, I'll be seeing her this Thursday and will talk to her about how to work on my obsessing over things, thanks for the suggestion!)

ANYWAY.

I was thinking about having a very subtle Disney theme for our reception. Nothing in your face, possibly nothing most people would pick up on unless they were paying very close attention, but just to add a little bit of the silliness that epitomizes 'us' as a couple. We're a very silly couple, so while I want a super elegant wedding, at the same time I want to incorporate that side of us as well. That's all to say, I was struck with an idea last night that I can't let go.

What if I gave away a free disneyworld vacation at my reception? I realize I said raffle, but now that I actually remember that raffle involves buying tickets, that's not what I meant at all!! That would be tacky to the extreme! I mean more of, maybe everyone is given a small box when they walk into the reception, with strict instructions not to open it until they're told to, and there's a brief explanation that someone will be winning a trip to Disney, and at some point in the night the DJ announces that it's time to open the boxes--one lucky person finds a beauty and the beast glass covered rose mini-ornament type thing in their box, or perhaps a small scale cinderella slipper, or something else Disney themed, and they're the lucky winner for a trip to Disney for two!

I think it would be an exciting little event to have at the reception, plus it provides a bit of incentive for people to stick around(I'm going to have an open bar with quality liquor and delicious food plus plenty of dancing, so hopefully that will keep everyone around anyway, but still) so that they can find out if they won or not. Maybe have one or two second place prizes for something else Disney themed, although I can't think of what right this second, because I literally just thought of having second place prizes while I was typing this, lol.

I know, it's a weird expense to add to the wedding budget, but(and I hope this doesn't earn me some hate) we're rather well off, I've already checked costs and it's totally doable, and I just love doing things for other people. I love seeing the look on someone's face when I give them a gift, it's so much fun! So much more fun than getting gifts, in my opinion, so I'd really love to give someone something at my wedding. And everyone in my family knows how Disney crazy I am, so it wouldn't be out of place at all.

What do you think? If this happened at a wedding you were at, would you be excited?

I think it's inappropriate and would completely undermine any elegance you manage to achieve at your wedding. It could also come off as a show off gesture- flashing your wealth.

I think it’s adorable, especially if you have the funds for it and it’s something that would make you and your guests happy, why not! If I were I guest I’d be excited! 😁

I think it's cute and would be very exciting as a guest. The only thing I would be worried about people opening them ahead of time. Maybe you could have the waiters pass them out when it's time, or during dinner or dessert.

Is it for only up to two people? So if someone had kids they would have to figure out those costs? One year to use it? What does it include? Tickets? Meals? Flights?

It sounds like a lot of variables to get this right. So with that I wouldn’t do it.

Oh, that's a good idea! I was also worrying that people would open them early, but if they were passed out at the time to open them, then that wouldn't be an issue! Thanks so much for that tip!

This is very strange and I would feel very awkward accepting this from a loved one. Disney also isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and I wouldn’t want to use my vacation time for this. It’s a nice thought but I’d skip it.

Love your creativity, and theme idea! Smiley laugh But the prize thing doesn't sit well with me. It takes the focus off the wedding and well, does feel a little tacky. Smiley sad It's your wedding though so your call.

Since you're such a Disney fan, will you have your wedding at one of their resorts? I bet they offer Disney wedding experiences that'll add a lot of fun to your reception. Or maybe buy a Disney favor that doubles as decor? For example, mini Disney frames could be used as place cards and guests get to take them home. If budget isn't an issue (but it may be for your guests), what about paying for part of their room? You could offer to pay for 1 night, or supplement room costs so if a $300 room is $250 for your wedding, maybe throw in $100 so guests only need to pay $150? Any those ideas strike you??? Enjoy your planning!

It's a door prize, not a raffle. Aaaand I don't really think they have a place at weddings. Are you inviting kids? Are you prepared for them to be heartbroken if they don't win it?

If I were you and you really wanted to give someone this trip, I'd offer it to your RB or FG and family. Or send your parents somewhere nice (probs not Disney, unless that's their thing). Basically, do something super nice for one of the people who is really going above for you for this day. And do it privately, not in front of everyone.

I don’t know if grandma or aunt Mary would be excited about it. I also would feel weird about getting a trip off someone’s wedding - it’s like going to a timeshare thing and earning something - but in this case I didn’t sign up for anything (well not on purpose anyway). I agree with both PPs - takes away a from elegance, sounds standoffish and is not everyone’s cup of tea. If you really want to have a “opening gift” factor maybe do gift cards or something, maybe a prize for best dancer or something of that sorts but not a raffle type of deal.

It’s a nice thought and very generous of you and FH, but I don’t think something this extra really has a place at any wedding. I’d feel so uncomfortable if I were the winner, and not want to take your cash, or plane tickets, or whatever format you choose. And as a guest in general I think I’d just be super confused as to why this is happening at your wedding!? If you think your friends and fam will understand and be excited, then go for it! But for me personally, this makes me want to crawl into a hole and hide till the reception is over.

Well, another option would be to just announce it as 'a trip to Disney for you and your loved ones!' Or some wording to that effect--that way if it's won by an unmarried person with a significant other, it can be a trip for two for them, if it's like my sister who has a husband and two kids, it can be a family trip for all four. I would probably not put a time limit on it, to be honest, because I wouldn't expect anyone to be able to contort their schedule that rapidly.

In general, when I consider a trip to Disney, I always think of doing it as the 'Disney experience I wanted as a kid' so that would be:

    - Flights

    - 7 day hotel stay at a Disney resort(1 day to arrive, 4 Disney park days, 1 rest day because Magic Kingdom can be exhausting and maybe you need a day after Magic Kingdom to recoup, 1 day for departure)

    - Five one park per day tickets(I personally like to eat at one of the Disney park restaurants on my rest day, like Be Our Guest in Magic Kingdom or Akershaus in Epcot, so I would include a day ticket for the rest day as well)

    - Disney dining plan(3 meals, quick service OR table service, per person, per night[includes arrival and departure days], 2 snacks per person per day, 1 refillable drink mug per person)

    - Memory Maker

    - Small souvenir budget adjusted to the amount of people in the winning party(very easy to do without handing them cash, which I know some people feel awkward about, because if you stay at a Disney resort you get a magic band which you can use to pay for things, either by charging to the room or to a credit card, OR you can put a balance on it beforehand, so I would just 'preload' their magic band balance)

So, that's what I would give them. Personally, I wouldn't give someone a gift less than what I would give to myself.

As far as how to organize it, I would think I'd take them aside after winning and tell them that we can discuss the logistics(when they want to go and who they're bringing) once I get back from my honeymoon. Smiley smile

Oops, I replied without seeing other replies. It seems the census is that it's a bad idea Smiley sad That stinks, I was really excited about it.

    What does RB/FG mean?

I would feel really uncomfortable accepting that extravagant of a vacation from any of my family or friends. We went to Disney with our two kids last year and our youngest didn’t even cost us anything and we still spent over $7k.

I suppose it would also be bad, then, to offer privately to the winner that if they don't like the idea of a Disney vacation, that they can have a different vacation they would like more?

I appreciate where your heart is at but this made me cringe. I think you should redistribute the wealth among all your guests and make everyone's experience at your wedding amazing. Pay for their accommodations for your wedding. Hire amazing entertainment, etc. Your wedding is an elegant, formal event and shouldn't be confused with a business convention giving out door prizes.

I think this is way too extra. If you insist on giving a vacation as a gift, give it to your parents or siblings or something. I would never accept something like this from a cousin or uncle, and it will probably come off like you're flaunting your wealth to at least some of the people there.

If I had the chance to get a free vacation I really wouldn’t care about any the details surrounding it. I’d be thrilled.

Really, it would come off as flaunting? I never thought giving a gift could be rude...I just love my family and friends, and love giving things to people. But I guess it was a bad idea Smiley sad Maybe I'll just take my niece and nephew to Disney one summer.

Would it be okay to give my parents a cruise as their thank you gift?

I don't think it's rude, and your heart is in the right place. I just think you need to understand how uncomfortable this could be for some people. Like others have said, put the money toward paying for guest accommodations or an extra activity/entertainment for everyone. This way all your guests will benefit from your generosity and no one will feel awkwardly singled out.

And I think that would be great for your parents, so long as you know it's something they would enjoy.

I think it's on theme and depending on how extravagant your wedding is, there might be a place for it. It will be the ultimate wedding favour for sure!

If this happened at a wedding I was attending it would depend on the couple and the wedding. If the wedding was low-key, I might feel awkward accepting this, but if the wedding was grand enough to warrant such a thing, I would accept it.
