Quirky Dessert Idea...?

Kelly, on March 2, 2021 at 3:01 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 20

Hello! My fiancée and I are getting married in October of 2022 and are so excited. I have been thinking (in the back of my mind!) for some time about desserts for our wedding. Alex (fiancée) and I both early on that whatever wedding we would have, we'd definitely want wedding brownies as our "cake-cutting" dessert. My thoughts are this: I would love to have a variety of desserts that are "Autumn/Fall" themed (i.e. cinnamon or pumpkin flavoring, etc.). But I was thinking that, with all the variety, that we don't necessarily need to make enough of each dessert for every guest (that way we don't have tons of leftovers!). We are having our dinner catered but the desserts are on us for the planning/hiring of another vendor. So a "for instance" - first come, first serve for slices of pie. Or first come, first serve on a platter of cinnamon flavored cookies. I just wanted some opinions about this idea that has been floating around in my head for some time! Thanks. Smiley smile

I've seen a lot of dessert tables on Pinterest that are fall themed and loved them all! I think pies/mini pies are super fun and different! Cookies are great too because they're not too filling, and are easy to just grab and go (perfect for guests like me that live on the dance floor lol).

You could also do a smores bar with hot chocolate!!

Make sure that your venue allows homemade food to be brought in. Typically you cannot do this except in your own backyard for liability/healthcode laws. Be very careful especially with covid.

The fall desserts sound awesome though and would be great paied with hot spiced cider. I would try to make sure there's enough of each for everyone. Leftovers are ok and are sent home with guests all the time. You would hate to have some guests say "you need to try the amazing cheesecake cookies" and then the plate is empty after 5 guests.

I love the ideas of pies! So pies or mini pies would be great. You could also do like an apple crisp or some sort of fruit crumble as I know those are really popular in the fall and you can usually make it in bulk. You could have a pumpkin cheesecake, apple cider donuts, maybe some fun cookies or cinnamon rolls. All of that stuff is fall themed!

Ohh, hot chocolate would be great! The venue has a bonfire gathering allowed after the dancing ends (for those guests staying on-site), and that would be awesome to have while around the fire. Thanks!

Hi Kelly! I like this idea a lot and just thinking about it makes my mouth water! We had something similar at our wedding called a cookie table. It is very popular in PA weddings. We had a maple twist cookie and variety of others (family made most but also had bakery make seashell shaped cookies and sailboats to fit our coastal theme). Due to covid, we had them bagged individually and labeled on the type of cookies were inside. Autumn leaf shaped cookies, cinnamon, apple, pumpkin desserts would be awesome!! 🍂🥮☕️ Below are photos of our Dessert Bar/Cookie Table and the cookie bags had a beach sunset on them with Thank You written on them. Hope this gives you inspiration ❤️

Yes! So many of those are options I have been considering! I think it would be really fun. What do you think about the whole "not enough for every guest", so first come, first serve sort of thing? So there aren't tons of leftovers or extra money spent when unneeded.

This is super cool. I actually love maple flavored things (maple sugar candy, hello!). I was thinking about little maple sugar candies as mini treats!

Yes, we absolutely would check with the venue. However, I would also venture to find a bakery that offers a customizable menu! As for portions, I was thinking of offering enough for, say, 2/3rds of the guests for each dessert. Not such small portions that it's problematic, you know? At least that is my thought!

Either offer enough for everyone to get 1 or don't have any. Portions for only half or 2/3 of guests almost never works out well.

I mean, as a guest, I'd be pretty annoyed if I saw someone else with a delicious-looking slice of pie only to find out there was no pie left and it was first come first served. I'd make sure to have enough for everyone to have the same options. Mini desserts are great but you'd need to have enough for every person to be offered the same options.

I personally don't mind that idea because I know a lot of people don't eat dessert or if they do, they choose one thing over the other. Like I'm more likely to pick a chocolate dessert while my FH would pick something fruity, so if there was no fruit option he'd probably skip and vice versa.

Thanks so much for your thoughts! This felt similar to my idea of why I might be able to not make one dessert per guest, as I know there are people who would opt out, depending not he option. I was also thinking about perhaps adding a dessert section in the RSVP card, with four or five options to choose their top two. I thought that might be a helpful idea...

I would make sure to have enough for each guest to have one.

Same. We had a dessert bar provided by our venue and there definitely was not enough for every guest to have 1+ of every dessert. But there was certainly plenty for everyone. I'd plan for a variety of flavors and for 2-3 pieces per person if they're mini desserts. ETA: 2-3 TOTAL, not of each option.

Thanks for that input! And for that clarification, I agree to the 2-3 per person, but not necessarily of each option. Thanks!

I’m doing a 3 tier wedding cake and desserts they do offer mini pies maybe that’s something you can look into. But we are not going to have enough for everyone I don’t think anyone will want 6 different cupcakes, a slice of cake, pies, brownies, cheeecake plus candy and caramel apples so we are doing each dessert for 50 people each flavor at our 80 person wedding

Love it! I agree with others to make sure there are enough of each choice for one per person , even if that means having smaller sized portions
