Pushed the wedding out, never had an engagement party

Liz1124, on May 16, 2019 at 8:35 AM Posted in Planning 0 8

HELLO!

So I pushed my wedding from November to January(Got too overwhelmed so I decided to give myself extra time before I sent out the invites) I never had an engagement party. I think after being engaged for 1.5 years it is too late to have one BUT I do want to have a cookout or dinner where I formally "propose" to my bridal party to be.

My FSIL wants to have an engagement party. Thoughts on having an engagement party vs me taking them out to dinner ?

I would just do a dinner party to formally ask them. I agree it's too late to have an engagement party. That is supposed to be a few months after you got engaged.

    THANK YOU!!!!

She wants to go all out and do an engagement party and I never really wanted one. I had been with my FH for 7 years already, I never felt the need for it.

I would find it odd to be invited to an engagement party 18 months after the proposal. I also think that asking your friends in front of other people puts a lot of unnecessary pressure on them to say yes, even if for some reason they wanted to say no.

I think engagement parties are just another silly reason to spend money personally. I don't see the need for them. I wouldn't go to one 18 months after someone had been engaged for sure. I'd skip that. Take your girls out to dinner and give them their proposals. Save the money for a killer reception!

Oh no hunn they have already assumed the positions, I just would like to make it official and make them feel special and appreciated is all. I expressed the same to my FSIL, I find no use for an engagement party in my situation, I would much rather have an intimate dinner for the bridal party and our parents. She just continues to insist.

    THANK YOU!

My FSIL doesn't get it. For a second (After her insisting for 2 weeks straight) I was second guessing my decision to have a dinner.

This is something we did. We didn’t want an engagement party, but we did want our families to meet. We had a Sunday afternoon where we invited the families over (and my BFF’s family) and we got some food catered from the grocery store and hung out and watched football. Very casual and I did ask the girls officially that afternoon with little makeup bags.
