PSA - Printing Your DIY Invites at Staples - Cost and Policy Change

Carole M (a.k.a "old tart"), on June 1, 2011 at 12:48 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

Hi everyone, I just returned from Staples. Apparently, using the regular printer/copier at .09 is no longer allowed at certain Staples(dependant on management of that particular store) because the invites are wrecking equipment. The clerk said all Staples may not be discontinuing this policy. So, call ahead.

I decided to go to another Staples to check. The next one I went to prints with a laser printer. Using a laser printer, the charge is .20 a copy.

The clerk explained that with laser printing, there is no smudging.

So, ladies, if you are planning on using Staples for your DIY/Print yourself invites, call ahead.

Sure hope this helps!

Staples is not the best place to get anything printed. I use Sir speedy print for everything i do and they are really cheap and helpful. Staples is high and if you call mom and pop shops and tell them it is your wedding invitations they will probably give you a great price. But I have learned from experience that retail big chains are more expensive. I pays to shop around!!!

This is good to know, thank you. Laser printing is also the way to go if you have pearlized paper. I bought my envelopments this weekend and my Dad reminded me that I can not put them through an inkjet due to the pearly(I guess that is what its called?) stuff in the paper.

Again, it was my pleasure. Sadly, in my area, I don't think we have any mom and pop stores left. So, saving a few a little bit is no big deal.

Stephanie...I know absolutely nothing of printers, laser or otherwise, so I was thrilled to actually find out there was a difference and that my ink wouldn't smudge. Smiley smile

Definitely go to the Mom n' Pop shops! My dad's worked with a lot of printers in CT and they do such a better job with everything, because it's what they actually do. It's not just a kid who is working at Staples after school. An actual print shop can also cut and fold anything you need them too as well.

Shana is correct. Small printing companies often have complete bindery services as well. However, most printers will only guarantee their printing if you use THEIR paper stocks. This is because different papers exist for different printing methods. (Also why a lot of those brought-in kits are wrecking Staples' copiers.) On the bright side-- their papers are typically LESS than the ones your going to buy anyway. Many of those high dollar invites you see in albums can be done custom for half the cost. Digital printing is the most cost-effective for small items, and a lot of small print shops are now offering this service.

I had the EXACT opposite experience. I wanted to have my RD invites printed and cut and a mom and pop charged $85... the KinkosFEDEx did them for $40. So shop around!

    EDubbs....I love the new avatar!

SHana...Thanks for the advice. I guess I lucked out with one our many Staples. It was actually a grown up. Smiley smile In all seriousness, they also offer cutting, etc.

Goskell...You are right about the brought in kits wrecking Staples' printers. That is exactly why they were no longer doing it at Staples #1. Apparently, with the laser printer at the other Staples, this is not an issue. ?? All I truly care about is the bottom line...the cost.
