"Provocative" Wedding Dresses

I love that wedding dress designers have begun embracing a wide variety of silhouettes and styles for brides to be. I'm obsessed with illusion panels, deep v-necks, backless, see through bottoms, all of it. My mom is not as keen. Every dress I've fallen for she's called "slutty" (which is an asinine...

My mom is not as keen. Every dress I've fallen for she's called "slutty" (which is an asinine thing to call a wedding dress, but I digress...), too provocative or tasteless. By way of background, she's a traditional, conservative person. I personally don't think anything I've picked falls into any of her buckets, but I'm starting to doubt myself.

Have you ever negatively judged a woman's wedding dress?

EDIT: I'm a terrible person and have, unfortunately, thought a woman's dress was unattractive. What I mean is that have you ever thought a woman's wedding dress was

too provocative.

Definitely. I'm pretty traditional to be honest. I can appreciate a low back and even a deep v cut, but I really don't like dresses that look like lingerie and are see thru. But you have to wear what makes you feel beautiful!

I HATE see through corsets. hate hate hate. i personally think it's weird for a wedding dress. whenever i see one of SYTTD, i'm totally judging lol.

but when it comes down to it, if someone likes a dress with a see through corset and wants to rock it on their wedding day, that's totally up to them.

Yes. Personally I don't think it is an appropriate place to show off too much skin. Save it for the wedding night. BUT it's also what makes you feel good. I don't feel confident in revealing clothing so for me, it doesn't feel right. But if you feel beautiful, go for it!

I dunno. I think some of these can ruin otherwise stunning dresses imo. I adored Kate Moss’ dress until I noticed the see through bottom. That dress would be perfect if she wasn’t showing sooooo much leg, the see through bit is right up to her crotch. Too much.

Yes, I have seen dresses that were inappropriate in my opinion. However, on the model they looked fine with skilled lighting and etc. IRL the execution was less than elegant. I should state I'm not a prude by any means and most of the dresses in this thread I would think are fine. Except the poor bride falling out of her dress because of poor construction and no internal cups.

@Lynnie, your dress is gorgeous! Also the one that Natalie posted there are two layers of lining, the second ending at the bride's knees. I think that's fine.

My friend wore a dress similar to the one Wendy is describing - just one layer of filmy silk, very low cut and drape-y. But she was a internationally competitive gymnast once - she's tiny with small bones and teeny boobs - it didn't look provocative at all. She let me try it on, and even undone (no WAY I could do that dress up) I looked like the stereotypical stripper-bride who elopes with the best man after the bachelor party. BAM - look at mah boobies, mah ass, mah everything cuz you can see it ALL in this damn dress.

I think it's really 30% the dress and 70% how it fits. There are exceptions, but most well-fitted dresses will usually look appropriate unless they're deliberately designed to be risky.

My Mom and I have watched Say Yes to the Dress a lot and she thinks a lot of the more provocative dresses are gorgeous. When I was preparing to look for dresses and talked about how I was interested in a low back my Dad was the one who was concerned and my Mom yelled at him that I will get whatever makes me feel like a bride. It worked out kinda funny because my dress is more on the conservative side and not at all what I had envisioned, but I couldn't picture myself in anything else after trying it on.

ETA- and yes of course everyone judges, but it's all a matter of personal taste. Most of the dresses with the illusion panels I find to be pretty, but I'm not as much a fan of the big poofy ball gowns because it's not anything I have ever felt comfortable in. It's just better if you're not a fan not to comment.
