"Provocative" Wedding Dresses

I love that wedding dress designers have begun embracing a wide variety of silhouettes and styles for brides to be. I love that wedding dress designers have begun embracing a wide variety of silhouettes and styles for brides to be. I'm obsessed with illusion panels, deep v-necks, backless, see through bottoms, all of it.

My mom is not as keen. Every dress I've fallen for she's called "slutty" (which is an asinine thing to call a wedding dress, but I digress...), too provocative or tasteless. By way of background, she's a traditional, conservative person. I personally don't think anything I've picked falls into any of her buckets, but I'm starting to doubt myself.

Have you ever negatively judged a woman's wedding dress?

EDIT: I'm a terrible person and have, unfortunately, thought a woman's dress was unattractive. What I mean is that have you ever thought a woman's wedding dress was

too provocative.

@Cait, it's a pretty dress, but seems very sheer! If that's what you'd like to wear then go for it. Good luck finding undergarments for it.

Meh, its not that provocative unless your tits are falling out. If its properly fitted Id like it.

I don't think its provacative at all. I think the dresses with the bustier tops with see through panels are more my idea of provocative.

However it is VERY modern so I can see where someone with a more traditionalist view may think of it as so

It is a bit scandalous, but I love it!! Everybody has a different cut off for what they think is appropriate or not. You can't please everybody. If you love it and can rock it, go for it!

@wendy C I absolutely LOVE the style of that dress and it was my second choice until I realized that after the cocktail hour you'd see a food belly. Oh well.

@Cait I like that dress. I hate to say this but honestly it’s going to look different on different people. My SIL is tall, thin, and VERY flat chested. She could pull off that dress without it looking provocative at all. If you have a bigger chest though, it will look different.

Yes, I have seen some dresses that I felt were inappropriate for a wedding gown. Usually it is ill fitted...intentionally and the bride wants it to look that way. A different person wearing the same gown would look fine in it. I think whatever your style is you should wear. You don't want to look at a dress for the next 30 years and think...I hated that dress. That would stink.

Ugly...yes, I have thought a number of dresses were not pretty. They were just not my style, that's all.

@Wendy, I don't think I would appreciate someone (either a friend or vendor) posting my personal wedding picture with negative comments...

@Wendy, my apologies. I misread that sentence. I read it as "it was kind of like lingerie."

What bra size are you? If you're a 32 or 34 B or C then I feel like that dress would be fine but as you get into the D and DD that dress would be like WHABAM here's my boobs. My dress has a low V but it will be fitted close to my chest and I'm only a 32C so it won't be like "heres my boobs". Be sure to try it on without a bra during your shopping to make sure you feel comfortable because I wasn't able to wear a bra with my dress, but it didn't bother me.

I'm a 28 or 30D, depending on my exercise and food in a given month haha. I personally don't think my chest takes over the show in any low v-neck, but, obviously, my mother and I come from very different mindsets.

Hmmm 28 or 30D that's a unique size! so it sounds like you're a VS model pretty much, petite but boobs lol. I think you'll be fine. Maybe your mom will feel better if you use pageant tape to tape your boobs in and make sure there's no nip slips?

My mom definitely thought my dress was too provocative, but I knew she would. I'm large chested and she's not and she had modesty panels sewn in to all of my dresses starting the second I hit puberty! Thankfully she went the silent route and just didn't comment on my wedding dress at all which was fine by me.

I'm still completely in love with my dress and I thought it was completely appropriate - but I didn't remember to sit up straight during the toasts and I'm showing too much of the girls in the pictures of me slouching. Oops!

I think it's all about balance! My dress was low cut but it wasn't skimpy or provocative anywhere else, so it worked for me Smiley smile

Example pic (leaning over to cut the cake):

I gotchu Cait! *hugs* the most important thing is that YOU feel comfortable. Like I said, try it on without a bra in the store and have them try to clip it the best way possible for accurate boob representation, then walk around the room and if you feel like you're naked or anyway self-concious don't buy it. Like I said, my Ida Torez "Cheryl" dress lays flat on my 32C chest so there's no boobs flying around because I'm so petite, but if my boobs were flying out I probably wouldn't have bought it because I would be so self conscious without my bra on

It's funny because I've always worn "provocative" clothing, and going into dress shopping I was heart set on showing off my back, my cleavage etc. I tried on a mori lee that was so gaudy looking, with a see through corset and my boobs popping out and just laughed at myself. I realized that I am only getting married once, and I want to show my future family these photos and think "wow that was a beautiful dress I had." I went with Maggie Sottero's Marianne and I can tell you I felt sexy and beautiful with a nice sweetheart neckline and corset back, and knew it's going to make FH gawk at me (in a good way lol). I think provocative is in the eye of the beholder and in the end once you actually try on these dresses you will know whether or not YOU want to wear it and whether or not YOU feel beautiful in it.

The dress you posted is beautiful and sexy and doesn't look provocative at all!
