Proposal coming soon?

Maria, on August 25, 2012 at 11:21 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

I love my boyfriend very much. We aren't engaged yet, but his behavior has changed a bit in a few weeks. We've talked a little bit about weddings, I brought up the subject though. Recently though it is like you talk to him about weddings he'll actually have somewhat of an opinion. Then a few days ago we were talking on Skype when he says "so, IF I got you a ring...say it were a size 8 or so, I know technically it would be too small, but would that be a problem?" later that night he sends me a link to an Overstock.com webpage with a beautiful diamond ring on it, of which he states he'll use that ring to propose to me.

I would just like to have an opinion...don't want to get my hopes up. Any help or advice is appreciated.

What is it that you would like an opinion on? Whether or not we think he is going to propose? If so, that's hard to say, maybe he means farther along in the future?

Edited to add: The best thing you can do at this point is to not pressure or not bring things up unless he does with regards to proposing (I'm pretty sure every woman's magazine would say not to pressure a partner into marriage)..Also it depends how long your've been dating..some couples talk about it at length if they've been dating years and years so there aren't big surprises. But it's hard to speculate since we don't know him. Just enjoy your time now as a dating couple sans pressure :-)

I love him so much and I don't want to pressure him at all. I am happy where we are and I'll just be more happy when he does ask. The thing is we've been dating for almost 2 years and the way he acts is...on a lack of a better word... crazy. He'll try to confuse me to no end when he is giving me surprises. Like how he gave me my black diamond necklace. Recently he's been trying really hard to confuse me. Just like with the skype message and the showing me the ring picture, that confused me the most (and set my heart racing too).

It definitely sounds like he is thinking about it, but as far as the actual proposal goes im not sure. i never even knew my fiance was thinking about it until he proposed.

I would try not to let it bother you. I know easier said than done but it will happen when the time is right.

if anything, maybe you could just discuss marriage in general or someday far far out in the future or something but try not to pressure. And you should have an idea its coming not when but someday. It's okay to know you have found the right partner and know he feels the same way about you.

I'm sure he will if he's showing you pictures of rings- my FH started doing that to see what style I liked (because it's VERY hard for a lot of them to guess-haha).

They key is to keep carrying on your relationship like everything is normal- once my FH started showing signs I got anxious- but he was just setting everything up so it would be a proposal I would remember and love. I mean- it definitely sounds like he's interested and is just testing out the waters- I'm sure if he loves you he'll want to make it as perfect as possible- especially if he likes surprises he's probably agonizing over it. Just let it go for now and enjoy the relationship for what it is- happy and wonderful Smiley smile when he's ready he'll do it...

It sounds like he's trying to get an idea of what type of ring you like and more than likely he is going to propose.

I have to tell you before Bryan proposed to me, he thought he'd be slick by "hiding" my ring. What guy would ever hide a ring in his girlfriend's closet? One day I found it so here comes Thanksgiving and nothing happened, Sweetest day(only in Ohio) came and went, Christmas came and went, I told my co-workers that if he doesn't propose by New Years I'd be pissed...New Years came and went! Shitttttttttttttt!!!!! My whole attitude changed, little did I know a week later(the weekend before my birthday-Jan 11) he proposed to me.

So here's what I'm going to say...just because he's hinting that he's getting you a ring don't get too excited. Easier said than done I know. Second thing is let him do it the way HE wants to propose. He may casually ask you what your dream proposal would be like, answer him truthfully. He may choose to do what you have dreamt or he may chose to do something totally different. Either way you'll be happy. Congrats on the soon to be engagement.

My husband and I picked out my engagement ring together at a jewelry store. He didn't purchase it (and it's not because he was saving) and propose until 3 months later. For a 4 year relationship, that 3 month gap felt like an eternity. I drove myself crazy during that entire time. My advice is yes, it might be coming but it may not be right away. He'll do it on his own time so try not to focus on it or or over analyze or you too will drive yourself crazy over it.

I brought up marriage a few times and it was assumed that we wouldn't become engaged until around 2015/2016 [after Cal-Poly]. I wanted it to be sooner, but he wasn't ready and was comfortable enough with how we were. I no longer pressed the issue [this was the summer of 2011]. When his dad passed away [who kept asking when we were going to get married], I guess it made him think and change the date. Funny enough, around November 2011, I was Christmas shopping online, I was Facebooking him and told him that I didn't like jewelry and if I ever got a ring, not talking about engagement more like birthstone or something, that I wanted it to be simple. I told him the color I liked and the cut. Low and behold, he was eating that free information up, I had no clue at all. He proposed December 2011. I'm not saying that your bf will do any of this, but if you told me that summer that mine would propose, I would have laughed.

Trust me when I say I am happy and comfortable where we are. I like to look at wedding stuff (I'm just that type of girl.) Yet when I talk to him about weddings and marriage I word it in a way where he can respond in a "yeah, okay, whatever." Which he has done in the past. Just lately it has been "oh yeah, why do you think that is? Why then? Why that?" Actually discussing it with me. It's just getting a bit weird. So lately I have cut down on the wedding/marriage stuff. Only because I'm getting freaked out, nervous, and excited. I try not to show it though.
