Priest and Rabbi to officiate wedding in Chicago in June 2013

Hi,

My fiancé was raised Jewish and I was raised Catholic. Neither of us are very religious at all (though we do celebrate major holidays, and have done so together). We are trying to figure out who our officiant would be, and my mom feels pretty strongly that we should have a "person of the cloth" by which she means either a priest or a rabbi. I think our best bet would be to just get both.

I know priests and rabbis do not always work together, but I have heard anecdotes about beautiful interfaith ceremonies, and I'm willing to do some research since it will make my mom happy and neither my fiancé nor I seem to care much.

Anyone know a priest and a rabbi who have officiated together before, or one particular individual who is kind, open-minded, and willing to do so? In general, I believe it's important to do good for others more than I believe in any specific religion, so I'm looking for a ceremony with only slight religious undertones.

Did you look into Celebrant USA? (They are here) Most of us do many, many ceremonies that blend religions in a gracious way, with readings, traditions, and rituals from each family. Last mont, for instance, my officiants did a Catholic/Jewish ceremony, a Filipino/Jewish ceremony, a Hindu/Muslim ceremony and a Christian ceremony with pagan influences. It's all possible.

A Catholic priest is, more than likely, not going to officiate in an non church setting, and there may be membership requirements as well. I'm not as up to speed with rabbis and their requirements if they are based in a synagogue.

I tell my couples that they can always tell their parents I'm a person of the cloth....it just happens to be gold lame......

A lot of rabbis won't do interfaith weddings at all, and those who will are often unwilling to co-officiate. That being said, Interfaith Family has a referral service for finding a rabbi who will officiate in your situation.

I was a guest at a wedding in a hotel where a rabbi and a Protestant minister co-officiated. I was very impressed with how they handled it.
