Pregnant Bridesmaid Dress

dragonfly726, on March 5, 2012 at 5:14 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

Hi Ladies, as I have mentioned in a couple previous posts, DH and I are TTC. Everyone on both sides of the family is excited for us. But now we are starting to run into some complications regarding our TTC and SIL's wedding on Sept 1. I am set to be a bridesmaid for her wedding, and she is wanting us to have dresses ordered within the next week. The thing is I may or may not be pregnant right now (we will be able to test this weekend), and if I am I will be 6 months pregnant at the wedding.

I have 2 questions for all of you:

1) If I *am* pregnant right now, this is the dress that SIL and I like for me because it comes in the fabric and color of the other BM dresses, but we aren't sure it would work for maternity (looks to me like it would, if I bought it a few sizes big and had it altered, but I've never been pregnant so I don't know)

2) If I *am not* pregnant right now, how should I handle ordering? She would want me in the same dress as everyone else if I'm not pregnant (cont

Cont- but I could end up pregnant between now and the wedding, and still be pregnant enough to be showing. Should I put off ordering and possibly stress-out my SIL? Or should I order one or the other of the dresses now? I know I really don't need to worry about this until after this weekend, but I want to have a game plan of what to tell SIL.

I would just see if you could wait until this weekend when you know more definitely. So much can happen between now and September, and you don't want to order one way and need it the other way. A few days here or there won't make a difference this far ahead for ordering the dresses.

If you get preggers next month, yes you will be showing in Sept. I was 3 months when i ordered my dress for my sisters wedding, in which i knew i would be 7 months at the time. NOW... its hard cause you don't know. That's the only dress she is choosing? I would choose it like 2 sizes too big... this way it can be taken in.. if for arguments sake you will be 6 months... first baby...depending on your build you may not be THAT big... ok maybe 3 sizes...? lol thats a tough one. Can you not wait until you KNOW you're pregnant or wait a few months? This way if you're not pregnant for another 3 months, then by the time the wedding rolls around you'll only be 3 months along and very tiny barely showing....can you wait to order it?

@Kimber M. I guess I am wanting advice more in case I get a negative result after we test. Like you said, I don't really want to get one and end up needing the other, but I could still end up being as much as 5 months prego for the wedding, even if I have a negative test this month.

@Sami B. This is the other dress, in truffle http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Satin-Gown-with-Side-Drape-Brooch-8567

If you are late, always have been normal, then yes you probably are pregnant. However, nobody has any way of knowing ... what is so bad about the dress all the other girls are wearing that you can't wear if you are pregnant during her wedding? I was in a wedding, where one of the BMs was pregnant and she wore the same knee length dress as the rest of us ... just had it ordered a few sizes bigger ... this way you can still match the other girls and if you aren't pregnant or something happens then you won't feel so weird ... and depending on where she is ordering it from, you might be able to wait till May/June to order it ...

PS this is why DH and I put off trying to concienve until we get through the weddings that are coming up ... I'm in 2 of the 3 and he's in all 3 ...

@Sabrina K. If we find out that this dress can't work, we have a back up, but it is a different fabric, and we are afraid it wouldn't match the color exactly for everyone else (also, it is nowhere near as cute).

As for waiting to order it, I would like to, but DB told her they would take 5 months to come in, so the deadline she gave us is this weekend, I already talked to her and she is okay giving me an extra couple days because of my situation, but I don't know how she'd feel about me waiting an extra month or two.

@MrsD2011, here's a pic of the dress everyone else is wearing, because of the cinching at the waist, we have been told that it would not work for a pregnant belly.

    Both dresses are from DB.

As for waiting to TTC, we had been planning on TTC right away before SIL even got engaged, and when I was asked to be a part of her wedding, I let her know this and told her that as long as she was okay with the way that might affect the dress situation, I was in. When we started TTC, we had hoped to be pregnant by this time already, this is our 7th cycle since TTC. We have no plans of holding off based on anyone else's lives.

Basically what I want to know is

    a) will the dress in the original post work for a 6 month pregnant belly if I order it a few sizes too big and have it altered?

    b) What should I do about ordering if I am not pregnant now but could become pregnant before the wedding? How should I go about talking to SIL about this without making it seem like I'm not excited for her wedding, which I definitely am.

For $129 I say buy the dress everyone is wearing, if you get pregnant, deal with it then (like 4 weeks before) it's not too expensive anyway.

More than likely the original dress would work because it definitly looks flowy and now that I've seen the other dress, I don't really think anyone will notice the difference to be honest

And to be honest I'd go with ordering the 1st dress you posted no matter what ... I don't think you can really tell ... and if it makes her or you feel better, you can always buy a brooch to go with the dress if you aren't pregnant

@Kristina M. $129 is a lot of money to waste on a dress if I don't end up wearing it. FH and I are on a tight budget. We can definitely afford the dress or I wouldn't have agreed to be in the wedding, but the price we all agreed to when asked to be in the wedding is under $150, so I can't really afford twice that plus major alterations if I end up pregnant.

@MrsD2011, when you say the original dress, are you referring to the dress she picked for everyone, or the dress I posted in the original post? Sorry, just a little confused Smiley smile

I'd find out when the latest you can order without incurring a rush fee. If you could push it to 3 months before the wedding you will know for sure if you'll be showing. Good luck with TTC! Tell your sil you are very devoted to the wedding but you want to match the other bms if you can so u r going to wait as long as possible to order.

I think either way you should choose a dress that allows room for baby. Pregnant or not you will look lovely either way, but its always better to be safe than it is to be sorry. I found this dress maybe something similar so you allow room and it will mimic the style of the bridesmaids dress that you and your SIL picked out.

As you mentioned, order it in a bigger size and have it altered.

or wait til your results come in, then order the dress.

@Whitney L. Thank you for your suggestion. We tried that dress on at one time while we were there and asked about it, and were told that even though it looks flowey and like an empire waist, it isn't because the bottom of the band comes down too low and unless I was only a few months pregnant or carrying very very low, it would not fit a belly. (basically the bottom of the band would go right across the belly, not above it)

@Maile S. Thanks for the reply. I am planning on waiting at least until this weekend after we have tested. And if I am pregnant I will be ordering SOMETHING (hopefully the dress posted in a few sizes too big, as the consensus seems to be that it should work). However, my question was more to do with how long should I wait to order if I am not pregnant now (but could be in the next few months).
