"Power Hour" instead of coctail hour

Molly , on November 8, 2010 at 1:55 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

So I was thinking instead of having a cocktail hour to have the wedding guests go to the reception while we are taking pictures...and while they are waiting on us have the dj engage them in games/fun dances..here is what I have in mind

maybe musical chairs, macarena, limbo, etc

Has anyone been to a wedding like this?? Or is this tacky??

I went to a wedding this weekend where the wedding guests had appetizers and punch while the wedding party took photos and an hour later we finally were allowed into the reception...I like the idea of everyone eating at the same time but am not sure how to entertain my guests during the downtime...thanks everyone!

What time is your wedding? My DJ offered free dance lessons during this time, which I think would have been fun, but since it was dinner time, we went with a cocktail hour. I think it is also nice for the guests to be able to explore the venue and mingle. Remember that they will need time to get there, sign the guest book, find tables, and chat with people they have not seen in a long time. I prefer having something to eat/ drink personally.

I've not been to a wedding like that with the games and stuff, but if you get the sense your guests would enjoy then go for it! I'm totally with ya, I dont' want to keep my guests waiting too long once they do all get there..so i've been to one where they had a slide show that showed teh bride and groom growing up and how they met..that can keep them entertained, but if the slide show is too long, that can get tired lol..what I plan on doing is instead of guestbook have a DIY photobooth..you can enter that in the search engine on this website to get a sense of it, at least I think for my guests they will have fun with that :-)

I didnt even think about the guest book and all that so thanks!

I'm not a huge fan of "power hour". Not everyone wants to play games, I don't care whose in the group. There will always be a handful that aren't interested. (Sort of like not everyone will dance at the reception,I've yet to see everyone on the floor)

Keep it as an option but not the focus. And what T-waffle just said.

I've never been to a wedding like that, I usually like the cocktail hour, it's time for the guests to mingle between themselves and get to know each other, but this is up to you, you know your guests and if you think they'll enjoy that, go for it.

I hate compulsory games or "programmed" activities, because to me summer camp was 20 years ago. If you're going to go this route, I'd suggest making sure the DJ isn't bugging people to play if they don't want to. If I've driven for hours and am finally having a chance to catch up with old friends, I don't want a cheesy DJ trying to make me do the hokey pokey.

BTW - to me, a "Power Hour" is something we did in college, involving a shot of beer every minute or so for an hour. I was about to be VERY impressed.

At that time....I would be looking for a cocktail. No, I don't care for the games at all...now dance lessons during a cocktail/appie hour could be fun.
