Postponing wedding-storing dress

Kate, on July 12, 2020 at 3:58 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11
Hey everyone! My wedding was supposed to be next month (August 21st) but we have had to postpone to next June. Any tips on how to safely store my dress/keep it from yellowing since it will be stored for such a long time, a little stressed about keeping it safely tucked away.

Keep it in a good garment bag or box

Keep it in a garment bag and in a dark closet.

I don't think so, but it couldn't hurt to check up on it every once in a while. My dress is in its garment bag in my closet. My wedding was supposed to be July 31, 2020, though we were forced to postpone to July 2022 due to COVID, so my dress will be sitting for another two years. After talking to my seamstress, storing it this way should keep it safe until my wedding. Double check with your seamstress to be sure, but I think your dress will be fine.

I had the same concern because we postponed our wedding from 10.10.2020 to 10.07.2021. I had to get my dress from the shop because they had to close temporarily for COVID-19, I've had it since mid-March. I contacted the bridal shop and they said to keep it in the garment bag, covered with the outer bag (like a large white trash bag) and keep it stored out of the sun. They also suggested taking the dress out every now and again to let it get some fresh air.

Is your large white outer bag plastic? My seamstress told me to take my plastic bag out since it can grow mold on the dress, something my bridal store neglected to tell me. Sorry you’ve had to postpone, it’s so hard knowing we have to wait another year! By the time we get married we will have waited almost 2 years!

The garment bag and the white outer bag are plastic. That's good to know. We are in Las Vegas so not much threat to condensation/mold except for during monsoon season (right around the corner). I'll definitely keep an eye on it! I'm sorry, that seems like such a long time - it will fly by!

Maybe keep keep it in a breathable bag during that season? My seamstress said something breathable, non acidic, not vinyl or plastic. Could also wrap in muslin cloth I’ve heard. Gotta keep mine safe from my destructive pup-he gets into everything!

So glad I read this. My boutique told me to just keep it in their garment bag but I was worried that it wouldn’t be enough.

I have had 2 dresses stored in my closet in their garment bags, one since 2017 and the other since last October. Both are fine with no fading or discoloration.
