Post Wedding Vendor Etiquette - Cake was hideous

Alex, on September 30, 2021 at 5:30 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 25

Hi All,

My wife and I just got married a week and a half ago and everything turned out perfectly, except for the cake. We had decided to go with this particular cake vendor which we found through social media outlets. Everything checked out, their designs were creative and beautiful. We met the owner/baker who was super friendly when we did the cake tastings and the flavors were good. From the get go, we knew the style of the exact cake we wanted, which was a cake that was made by the same baker, and we discussed that this was the look we wanted to go for. There were no issues, the owner said she had remembered this particular cake and how she made it and that it could be done - no problem at all.

Fast forward to our wedding day, she delivered the cake and set it up herself. Not only did it look nothing like that original photo we provided, it was extremely sloppily made, and the entire cake was tilted! The blackberries seemed to be randomly placed and gave off a random blob appearance, and the frosting between the tiers wasn't even spread. Our guests said it was a pretty hideous cake overall.

We've reached out to the owner via email with no response still. They are a private baker what operate out of a shared kitchen space and only have an Instagram (no Yelp or anything), and do not have much presence on sites where we could write a review to warn others.

We are simply looking for an explanation or anything that would've possibly went wrong on making the cake or just a simple apology. I don't understand how a product with an appearance like this could even be delivered for a wedding. We've even gotten some pretty embarrassing comments from our guests on the appearance of the cake, who thought we wanted this Tower of Pisa look.

The left photo was a photo of the cake we wanted and was expecting, one that was designed and made by her pulled directly from their social media page. The right photo was the product delivered to us.

What is the right way to approach this situation? I'm starting to believe that we would simply just not get an answer.

TIA!

I’m so sorry you experienced this. I would reach out and complain and if nothing results from that, write reviews on different platforms so that future brides don’t experience the same thing you did. Sending you a virtual Hug!

I'm so sorry that the cake didn't turn out as expected! I would definitely leave reviews for them (and include the pictures) on multiple sites - Facebook, Yelp, Google, and wherever else you can. Have you tried calling them since they haven't replied to emails? How long has it been since you emailed them?

I agree that I’d leave reviews wherever you can and see if you can find another way to contact the baker. Honestly it looks like two completely different people made these cakes just by the way the layering was done. In your cake the layers aren’t even trimmed so they lay flat, which is an exceptionally amateur thing to do in stacking cakes.

I would guess that the baker knew when they delivered the cake and set it up that it wasn't up to snuff, and that's why they're avoiding you. You may not get a response from them. As PPs suggested, leave a review wherever you can, including the picture. This may draw them out, so you stop leaving reviews, or edit them after they contact you.

How did you pay for the cake? If it was with a credit card, I would contact the credit card company and dispute the charge. Send them the picture, too. Maybe they can get you a refund for the cost.

Congrats on your marriage, and good luck dealing with this!

Eek—so sorry you’re having to deal with this. I would wonder if she even made the first cake or is misrepresenting her work online.

There is not a snowballs chance she made the cake on the left. No way. You’ve been duped. Dispute the charge with your credit card company.

    That’s a ridiculously sloppy job.
Have the credit card disputed and reversed.
You shouldn’t have to pay for that.

I'm so sorry. There's no way that girl made the cake on the left. She plagiarized the photo and passed it off as her own work. Did you happen to sign a contract with her? I would call her and leave a voicemail giving her the chance to rectify the situation or you will be forced to escalate.

If you did not sign a contract, then lesson learned. Leave a bad review everywhere and dispute the charge on the card.

This! I really do not think she made the cake on the left OR she delegated and had someone else make your cake. I'm leaning towards the first possibility.

This sounds mad sketchy. Only instalgram without a real kitchen or reviews? Agree that this seems like a scam. Don't bother expecting apologies or responses. Report, complain, and dispute wherever you can.

Omg yes that looks horrible compared to the inspiration picture. I wonder if she even made the first one 🤔 I feel like she owes you some sort of refund.

Oh my god - I'm so sorry, but I definitely LOLed when I saw that side-by-side. This is nuts! I agree, dispute the charge with your CC (which I would normally NEVER suggest, but I think you were pretty clearly duped/scammed). I hope this becomes a funny story to you someday.

Yep that baker misrepresented that photo as her work. It most definitely wasn't. I would stop payment on the CC. Wow, that's insane.

I did a simple google search of the image on the left and this result came up: https://www.cclweddings.com/blog/2020/5/11/adriana-amp-brian-the-wedding (click through the pictures and you'll see the cake) and that cake on the left was made by m cakes sweets which has a website, facebook and pinterest account as well as instagram, so whoever made your cake, definitely did not make that cake. Hopefully you can dispute the credit card transaction using this info.

It sounds like you were flim-flammed. Private baker, shared kitchen, “remembers making this cake” but then yours looks like an epic Pinterest fail? I am an amateur baker and can tell you with 99% certainty that baker was not the creator of the original…so many things were done differently. I think you just have to cut your losses.

I know it’s frustrating, but i think it’s actually pretty laughable. If it happened to me, I’d want to have an ugly cake for every anniversary just as a little joke lol

I would demand my money back and leave reviews once you have your money. If they ghost you, I’d report them to the BBB. Do they have a physical location can you go to in person? This is fraud and plagiarism. Leave messages saying you’re seeking council if they don’t respond.Keep up posted!
