Poll: Line Dances

Madison, on April 19, 2018 at 4:20 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 49

I've heard a few posts lately totally hating on line dances - which is absolutely fine, to each their own. But as for me, I am a huge lover of line dances! I'm not the best dancer so I like being able to follow along to something specific and I feel like (at least in my experiences) they can really get a crowd moving. How does everyone else feel? Love them or hate them?

I hate line dances personally. But when they come on I know a lot of people flock to the dance floor, that's usually when I head to the bar.

So, I take this a few ways. There are line dances like the cha cha slide (which usually DJs use to get people on the dance floor early in the night) then there are real line dances (like to country songs that folks have been doing for generations). My mom loves the electric slide, like LOVES. So that's on our playlist but for the most part I requested our DJ keep off the twist, the macarena, and other songs that are more awkward than fun. However, FH is super southern, and his friends and family sometimes break out the old country songs (think, Cooperhead Road) and do an easy line dance that I picked up and learned first try. I think we will sneak in one or two in the middle somewhere. Guests who are already up and dancing can give it a try or they can grab a drink and relax for a minute while FH/friends/I break it down old country style. Of course, we aren't doing a ton of these that could break the party mood or anything just one or two to incorporate something they always do at weddings and parties and gives my northern family a taste of FH southern roots.

I don’t mind them either way! Cha cha slide will forever be in my heart since it was a 90s/00s song

I'm in south Texas, so we will definitely be having copperhead road in there! The "ride the train", macarena, and chicken dance are on my do not play list - I totally agree they are more awkward than fun. It sounds like your mom and I would get along because I also LOVE the cha cha slide. I just about scream at the top of my lungs during "Everybody clap your hands" lol. I also will probably be having footloose, cupid shuffle, wobble, and maybe a few others.

Every wedding I've ever been to has a packed dance floor when one comes on. I've seen the threads you are referring to and I think some people forget that there will be a mix of people of all different ages with many different tastes in music. I think it's best to find music that appeals to the majority of your guests and from my experience line dances are still very popular.

I really don't like line dances, but most of the people in my family do. I will probably ask the DJ to limit it to one or two. And, I hate, hate conga lines.

We thought about playing the chicken dance in honor of my uncle who passed away - it was the only thing he'd dance to and he loved it, but I think we're going to skip it.

I might ask for one polka since my family is Slovak and they always play polkas at weddings. Some older family members also like to twist and jitterbug, but I'm not sure about those either.

On one hand I love them because they are so nostalgic for me but on the other hand I realize that they can be super awkward. Especially if they are played too soon after dinner.

I don't think they will be on our playlist.

In DC and I hate them. I guess I hate that the songs are so old there is nothing new and fresh out there. Our band will be told no line dances and no requests from my mother 😈.

I hate to dance and just feel awkward, but I'll dance if Cha Cha Slide or Cotton Eyed Joe comes on. I know the moves to those and therefore personally feel much less foolish. I think they're nice to throw into the mix as long as nobody feels pressured to participate in them. But I hate line dances like the ones where everyone holds on to shoulders....blech.

I love line dances (Cha cha slide, cupid shuffle, etc) and in fact, FH and I were in a movement class together in college when we first met (both theatre majors) and we'd occasionally do line dances for fun. In my crowd, it really gets everyone up and moving.

I'm a professional wedding singer, and in all the weddings I've played with my band, no one, I repeat: no one, has EVER asked us to play any line dances. And I've never seen them at any of the weddings I've attended, which is a very high number.

Most people find them annoying, and they're definitely not needed to get a crowd moving.

I hate them, so awkward and I never dance to them. Thankfully, they are not popular in my crowd and I've rarely seen them at weddings.

My fiance and I actually go line dancing and two-stepping a couple times a week, so we'll definitely have some line dances at the wedding. However, we'll probably incorporate more contemporary country line dances that we do out here (Aces and Eights, Shape of You, etc.) and stay away a bit from the "traditional" line dances. Not too many, since not all the guests enjoy country music and line dancing, but enough for the line dancing group and so we can get our fix. Haha.
