Plus-size brides: Dress silhouette?

I'm 5'8" and a size 12. I've been leaning towards fit and flare gowns, but a few people have told me A-line gowns are better for curvier girls (especially those bigger in the hip/thigh area like myself). Just curious what silhouettes other brides here are wearing to show off your curves in the best...

I can't find a picture of me in mine, but I'm 5'8" and a size 12-14. Mine is a mermaid with corset back. Have you tried all different styles?

Definitely try on different styles - I tried on a modified fit and flare and it looked really good on me - I just felt super self conscious in it because I don't wear many fitted items ever. I went with an A-line. I am 100% in love with it and can't wait to wear it.

I always thought I would go with an A Line but I have a belly (I had gastric bypass surgery years ago so I have a lot of loose skin in the stomach area) and I ended up with a dropped waist ball gown (specifically a "Belle" from Alfred Angelo). Here is a picture of me in my dress. (Pardon the expression on my face, that was caused by the GM that thought it was funny to "boo" DH and I because we didn't smash cake in each other's face).

The first dress I bought was a sheath but because i'm so curvy it doesn't look sheath. But after realizing i'm not gonna feel comfortable dancing with such a tight dress on all night I went and tried on a dress similar to Christina's but strapless, its an empire ball gown and I love it. The first dress was only $75 so as long as it doesn't need alterations i'll probably change into it toward the end of the night lol.

I would post pics of me in mine but my FH gets on my phone and wouldn't want him to see it but I went with a sweetheart neckline satin ivory ball gown has gorgeous beading and train. I'm I would say on the overweight size but in that dress I feel like I'm smaller Smiley smile so honestly the best thing to do is try dresses on and think to yourself how do I look in this.

I am a 12/14 and carry it in the boobs and booty. I went with a drop-waist. And as others have said, the corset works wonders Smiley smile

If u got the hips for it.go for fit and flare, but make sure you view yourself at all angles. I went with the ballgown cuz I was going for an elegant more traditional look

I'm a 14/16 and my favorite dress I've tried on so far is a fit and flare. It was my exact size and fit perfectly! I think about it and can't help but smile. But definitely try on all types. I never thought a fit and flare would look good on me because of my size but it's perfect, even from the side. And this dress was great because I don't like corset backs. And with this dress, the corset was inside of the dress. So I still had the shapewear and the zip up back with the button. Only hoping I find something similar to that but cheaper.

I bought an A-line but the seamstress took it in below my hips (I have smaller hips) and it looked more fit and flare by the time she was done and it looked great! I'm a size 18/20. ETA pic - left is my final fitting, right is from DB's website.

    I have a mori lee 3124

I felt bigger in an a line dress, I think its because I have large boobs, so it didn't really give me much shape.

Well I am bigger than you but I am in a fit n flare (It doesn't look fit n flare to me but that last what she called it). It really varies dress by dress. Just tell your consultant you want something a little more flattering to your figure!

Definitely try on everything. I thought I'd want an A-line as well, and while they were OK, fit and flare made me look much slimmer and was more flattering. It may be different for you, though! So don't get too stuck on a certain silhouette when you go shopping...try a few of each. My final contenders were between an A-line and a fit and flare and I went with the fit and flare.

Mrs FU - that was my second choice! To the point where I still look at the picture and wonder if I made the right choice.. I loved how lightweight it felt!

This is my dress. I hated everryyy minute of "plus size" dress shopping for the record. I heard a ridiculous amount of sizes I needed to order. My dress is a 10, which is what the sample was, that is the pics below. BUT, they did say I should order a 12. I gained a few since, still working on getting it to fit.

I'm 5'4 and wear a size 20. I got a A-line dress. I felt this style looked the best on me. Mermaid made me like pregnant and princess made me look wider. I really think it depends on your shape. I found the best way for me to see what I looked like was to have a picture taken of each dress I tried on. This really helped me decide which styles looked best on me in person and in photos

    Good Luck!
