Plus-size brides: Dress silhouette?

MzRosaLu, on March 17, 2015 at 11:39 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 41

I'm 5'8" and a size 12. I've been leaning towards fit and flare gowns, but a few people have told me A-line gowns are better for curvier girls (especially those bigger in the hip/thigh area like myself). Just curious what silhouettes other brides here are wearing to show off your curves in the best way?

I went for a princess style- which was so NOT what I planned. BUT, it was the most flattering. I would have loved to pull of a fit and flare- but it just wasn't what looked best on me.

first pic: the dress I chose

Second: the more fitted Mori Lee. I loved it- but it just didn't flatter from the side or back.

Go try on different styles. if you like fit and flare, don't rule it out based on other people's opinions. try it on yourself and decide. i honestly think fit and flares look most amazing on girls with curves. especially with hips and butts. curves should never be hidden! show of those assets!

I went for a ballgown which I originally against because I thought it would make me look huge and short but I think it was the best choice.

I would just go and try on a lot of different styles. Keep an open mind and you might be surprised by the one you think looks and feels the best

I went typical plus size with a ball gown. I was trying fit and flare and mermaid, but they were so damn uncomfortable and accentuated my stomach which was obviously not what I was going for. The A-Line dresses kind of did that too.My thighs were smooshed together so tight, it was not creating a good situation.

12 is kind of questionable as plus size, though so you can probably pull off most looks.

Not to hi-jack your thread OP, but...

Jenn B your dress is similar to mine, what are you doing bra-wise, if you don't mind sharing? I only have one strapless which I'm wearing in the picture, but it's not working for me.

I knew I wanted a ball gown/big princess dress to begin with. That's what I ended up choosing. I really wouldn't call a size 12 plus size though!! I wear normally 16/18, my dress when they ordered it was 18

I wear a Size 12 too, and I got a mermaid gown. I have a big chest and butt, so it helps accentuate the hourglass figure. A corset back helps a lot too.

@Elyse- I was just envying your dress, ha ha! I'm going to have them sew in some cups- because no matter what bra I put with it, it shows. I'm also going to have them put in some boning to make the cups stay firm. I don't like that it feels like the fabric could flop over at the top. Since it's a small corset in the back, when it's pulled super tight- I feel pretty secure in there.

I'm amazed at the "12 isn't plus size" comments, as I've had plenty of people make negative comments about my weight in the past. You guys are so kind. lol. I guess I should specify that my biggest problem area is my tummy, that's where I tend to gain weight first. Thanks for the feedback - I like seeing you ladies in your beautiful dresses!

It sort of depends on where you carry all of your weight. I am about a 14/16 and got a very fitted mermaid style gown. I carry most of my weight in my stomach. The dress is ruched all on top, so it sort of hides that, and then shows off my curves and skinnier legs. That wasn't possible with a ballgown. The dresses I tried with poofier skirts accentuated all of my flaws because you could only really see my big boobs and fat stomach haha.

Mine is a modified drop waist...if I wanted, I can get a petticoat to fluff it out more, but I love the way it fits without..

Ahhh you have a corset so that helps! I wasn't sure if cups work with larger busts, but I'll have to talk to the seamstress when my dress comes in. Just something I'm worrying about even though there's no point in worrying about it right now Smiley smile

I agree with Ashleigh. My legs and butt are probably my favorite parts of my body, and you really couldn't see them in a ballgown or A-line.

My dress is also a corset. I tried other dresses that were zip ups and I just didn't feel as comfortable. I wanted to be sucked right in. If you haven't yet, maybe try a corset and see if you feel different in it?

I'm 5'8", a size 12-14 and I also carry my weight in my hips. I figured that I'd end up with an A-line but tried on a fit and flare and loved it. Try on all silhouettes since they look different on everyone.
