Plus size bride having trouble with white dress

I am having a problem with a white dress. I am a plus size bride, who is larger than my FH. I think I will look huge in a white dress, let alone in white and standing next to my FH in pictures. He loves me for exactly who I am, and we are very happy. But I think I might want another color dress,...

Hey Dorothy if you do try on the first one can you post a pic of yourself in it? I've been considering this dress and would be interested in seeing it on a plus size bride like myself. I'm in Canada and would need to order it online if I wanted it, therefore not able to try it on so your help would be appreciated. If you didn't want to post it publicly, you could PM me too Thanks!

My hairdresser was wearing an Ardyss thingy and she actually did look slimmer. I haven't tried it yet but she said it worked better than spanx.

Dorothy B, I think the first one would be better(The Side-draped bodice and off-the-shoulder neckline).

I saw a bridal expert, on a local TV show, about 5 months ago. She said that many brides are choosing dressing is various colors. White and Ivory are no longer the only choices.

One "bride" was wearing a beautiful plum colored dress. Another was in silver. They looked just as pretty as white and ivory.

BTW, many people, no matter what their size, do not look good in white. It is a tough color to wear.

My daughter will be in ivory.

Hey there.. i'm a big girl.. i honestly NEVER wear white because it looks horrifying on me. But when i wen to try on dresses, i found a very ivory dress, its like more a pink champaign color.. it looks uneblieveable on me.. makes me feel like a princess.. you will find something! And it's you're wedding, if your FH is ok with you wearing light blue chiffon and whomever may be helping you financially (like your mom or something) is ok with it, then i dont see why not. I only mention your mom because its a lot of mothers' dream to see their daughters in white on their weddingday... good luck~

That's true, white doesn't look good on all people. It looks better on people with cool coloring.

If white gold looks better on you than yellow gold and you have dark hair your season is "winter" and pure white would look best on you.

If white gold looks better on you and your hair is light, your season is "summer" and a rose white would look best on you.

    warm colors are:

    Yellow gold, dark hair="autumn"

    yellow gold, light hair="spring"

The warm colored look best in the ivory and champagne colored dresses.

Im a plus size bride as well. I wore white for my first marriage. I had an A-line dress with layers at the bottom to draw attention down. This time around we are having a renaissance wedding and Im diong a turkish style dress like in the picture. But it will be in cream, beige, and Ivory. I will also have a full circle skirt under.

I just remembered when I went to try dresses on at David's Bridal there was a lady trying this dress on: http://www.davidsbridal.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplayView?langId=-1&catalogId=10051&storeId=10052&catentryId=6096905

It looked so beautiful on her! When you click that link there are pictures of real women at the bottom and you can see that they really look good and feel confident.

I dunno it just depends on your tastes I guess, I like modest dresses. The blue dress idea was neat too though. I was actually considering wearing a colored dress but when else are we going to be able to wear a white wedding dress? (Other than Halloween. hahaha!)

Dorothy, congratulations on your upcoming marriage. I am a plus sized bride as well and understand your concerns. Thankfully, you have time to a) look for a dress that screams "this is it" or b) get busy on getting your body where you want it to be.

There are lots of options out there for the plus sized bride. I had no idea until I started looking. I found my dress in an overseas product market and it is a bit different as it has lots of distracting but beautiful scrollwork on the bodice and an ivory bottom with the same dark scrollwork all around the hem and the train. It cam in several styles and scores of colors. the company is called alawoo.com. The size chart only goes to 26 but they can go larger. Each dress is custom made and the prices are unbelieveable!

I chose not to wear white because I am darker complexioned and it simply doesn't flatter my skintone. I'm also a nurse and wore white uniforms forever = have very little white stuff.

    Good luck !!!

Dorothy, be sure to invest in a really good set of undergarments similar to what you will wear on your wedding day before you go trying on dresses. Great support makes all the difference. I found that out the hard way

I am also a plus size bride, but it has alway been my dream to get married in a white dress. Dont stray from white if it's what you want to wear. I know it can get stressing searching for the right dress to rit your figure, but just take your time and you will find the perfect dress. It also helps if you know your body shape (hour glass, pear shape, etc). I found my dress at DB and it's my dream dress. Good luck!!!

Dorothy- that first DB dress you posted is absolutely lovely and I am sure you will look beautiful on your wedding daySmiley smile I know you will find the right dress, it may take a little while and a few times to the bridal shops, but whether you choose to wear white or not you are going to be glowing and beautiful!

For big brides....dont go fully white- try something offwhite maybe ivory-ish or light cream hues depending on your skin tone. Always go for something with a corset and ballerina ribbons to tie the back instead of a zipper. Just in case you put on weight before the wedding day and find it hard to zip up. Corset visually shows a waist. Avoid empire cuts as you may appear pregnant in the photos.

Thank you all for your very kind words of encouragement. I am doing some more dress trying this evening, wish me luck.

As far as the Mom suggestion, unfortunately I don't have a Mom anymore, she passed away a few years ago. This is I know one of the reasons I don't want to go dress shopping, it brings me down. I have many friends and family that will go with me, but they are not my Mom so it is hard. Right now I am doing the feeling out process to see what I like and then the real shopping will start.

@Shelly M- Was that you standing next to me when I tried on my dress? j/k but that is the DB dress that I tried on and I lit up. I was actaully able to find it cheaper than at DB on another website.

@Dorothy- wear what makes you comfortable. Be sure and try on a few different styles, even something that you think that you won't like. I didn't think that I would like the dress that I utlimately picked. And now I can't imagine wearing anything else.

I absolutely despised dress shopping. I am at the largest I have ever been. My FH is also smaller than me. David's bridal (at least my location) was the worst for me. They didn't have that many in my size. I didn't want white either. I was going to go with champagne but ended up with ivory that looks almost like white. The dress has side rouching and a sleeveless v neck. It really does make me look smaller. The dress name is chelsea and the designer is Mon Cheri.

Good luck and don't let it get you down. Just remember he loves you no matter what.

I think white still looks still good on a plus size as long as the dress has the right cuts for your figure, but if you do not like white that much have you considered red? I cam across a site that has really great white plus size dresses but also red ones. This is the site:

Dorothy B. Rouching is the answer! I am also plus-sized. When trying on dresses, I discovered that materials like satin, and organza were not doing anything for me. So I had to go with a more light weight material so I went with Chiffon in Ivory and made sure that I had a dress with rouching. Rouching works miracles and actually it makes me look a size smaller in my dress. Good luck to you!
